Currently our very worn kitchen table can only comfortably seat 8. But our little one in the high chair would like to move out to the big table and baby #8 (3weeks old) will need a spot down the road too. So we'd like to have something that would accommodate all 10 of us nicely.
I"ve seen the AmishTables site. It's very nice and overwhelming too!
Do you all have huge tables? Or do you put together two smaller tables? Do you use benches? Have you bought from mail order before?

I've got 7 kids (expecting #8 in July) and we have a large table that my husband made in our dining room. However, with this new one we are going to be kinda "squooshed," so I think he's going to have to make us a bigger one... which we will have a hard time fitting in the room... sigh.

We're in need of a bigger table (it really only seats 6, but we're squishing in 7). We've got the wood for DH to build us the huge, "MACK DADDY" table. We're talking 12 ft long, and 3 1/2-4 ft....

We are only a family of six, but we entertain a lot. Our table seats 10 and we got it on Craigs List for a great price. The key w/ CL is patience and to be fearless in haggling. :-)

We can fit 10, but its a bit squashy. I'm thinking of making a bigger table, or I might make another 8/10 seater so I could put 2 together. I'd also like to hear from people who have put two together, the pros and cons. Also regards benches.

I won't even give you the dimensions of our table, but suffice it to say it's very tiny and just fits the three of us. 
But I still can't help putting in my two cents.  I would think that if I needed a really large table, I'd be more inclined to go with two large rectangular tables. It would give me enough room for the family when put together, and could accommodate even more people when separated. If I went this route, I'd be sure to get a table with perfectly square ends so they fit together well without any gaps, and I'd be inclined to cover the whole thing with one piece of clear plastic - like the really thick stuff they have available in WalMart in the fabric section. That way crumbs wouldn't get between, and spilled drinks wouldn't find their way there either. I think that when it came time to move the table, for cleaning or moving or whatever, that the two smaller tables would be more manageable.
I was looking on Overstocks, and they had this guide for table sizes and how many they seat.
Square tables:
52 inch x 52 inch (seats 6 - 8)
Oblong and oval tables:
52 inch x 70 inch (seats 6 - 8)
60 inch x 84 inch (seats 8 - 10)
60 inch x 102 inch (seats 10 - 12)
60 inch x 120 inch (seats 12 - 16)
60 inch x 142 inch (seats 12 - 16)
70 inch x 64 inch (seats 10 - 12)
70 inch x 72 inch (seats 10 - 12)
70 inch x 96 inch (seats 10 - 12)
70 inch x 114 inch (seats 12 - 16)
70 inch x 126 inch (seats 12 - 16)
70 inch x 144 inch (seats 12 - 16)
Round tables:
36-inch diameter (seats 4)
48-inch diameter (seats 4 - 6)
60-inch diameter (seats 6 - 8)

We are expecting #10. But, years ago when we built our house, we planned the dining room around a 14' table. We found a GREAT hobby carpenter who crafted the table and matching benches for a VERY reasonable price. Ask around and see if there is anyone in your area in need of work who has a portfolio of great tables.

I had to go and look.. we have 2 leaves in the table and there's 1 more.. so it can be as long as 98 inches.
that would seat 12-14 reasonably well.
We use benches on the sides.. I hope to replace the sad ones we have.. with 2 benches on each side to fit the table at the length we use for our family.. and then be able to add chairs for guests.
Benches are lovely.. for one thing.. we can push the table right up to the wall when not in use.. which gives us a much nicer walkway around it. Second.. you can fit more people on a bench than you can fit chairs in that same space. Most especially if some or all of those people are little. Chairs fit the number of people one per chair.. a bench that seats two adults can seat 3 kids. You have a bit more flexiblity with seating that way. The bench on the wall ends up with a "back" because it's up against the wall.. so you really only end up with back less seats on one side.
Here just a while ago someone posted a link to a bench that looks really simple to make.. wonder what I did with that url...

We bought our table 14 years ago when we had three boys 3 and under and the expectation of many, many more. The table comfortably seats 12 and we have fit 17 around it before. We have benches on one side and one end and chairs for the rest. Our benches were reclaimed from a church that was remodeling, and cost nothing. They are solid walnut. We then went to the local flea market and found a craftsman to make a table to match.
The table is 9 feet long and 42 inches wide.

Not big enough. We really need to get rid of our chairs and get benches. We have 11 eating every night and at Christmas when my son came home, one had to sit on the couch. Also, having people over is challenging. Couches again. But we have filled up the available space with our table. No more room!

I'm always on the lookout for extra benches for this reason and because they are great for other uses around the house! Love BENCHES!
