I was all set to make laundry soap. Have my 5-gallon bucket, my 1000 gms of Savon de Marseille ready to be grated, and my Borax. I've been waiting patiently for the washing soda to be delivered to our local Ace, but I guess the snow slowed them down. In the meantime, I googled to find out if I could sub baking soda for washing soda, and read that washing soda is really strong and caustic. Yikes!
Those of you who make your own soap, have you used baking soda? Are you happy with the results? Any other suggestions/info for me?

I make my own laundry soap and my recipe includes washing soda AND baking soda. I've used another recipe that didn't include the baking soda, but I find this current one to be far better. Everything seems cleaner and the whites even seem whiter!
So,I'm not sure how it would be with just the baking soda. Maybe make a small batch and try?

I have only used the washing soda but I going to try adding the baking soda if it cleans even better!

I also use both washing soda and baking soda in my mix, but I have made it without washing soda before when in a pinch. It works....but just not as well. The clothes didn't smell as clean.

Um, I don't believe you can substitute them--they are *not* the same, at all.
Washing soda is caustic, in a sense. But it doesn't harm the clothes, and it is better for the septic system I have, than the commercially manufactured brands. Not to mentioned being cheaper.
I use the tipnut.com laundry detergent page--recipe #1, I believe...and add baking soda to mine.
I am going to be adding some essential oil in my next batch, as soon as I can find some locally (or at least, in OKC...). DH would prefer a different/better scent.

Rachel I really like lavender oil in mine and sometimes a dash of clove oil. Nice scent and not "girly" for my dh or teen boys.

I cannot stand the smell of lavendar...ugh...lol
I use Zote laundry bar soap in mine, and it has a very faint scent. I was thinking almost something minty. Or citrussy. With only DH being old enough and manly enough to complain about florals, wellll...lol....
He just wants them to smell 'different'...lol.

I've used lemon in the wash.. though I didn't use homemade soap.. it's nice.. also lemon grass is fresh without being heavy citrus.. I like using balsaam fir in the water when I'm cleaning around the house.

Rachel, do you boil your soap before mixing it with the other ingredients? If you do, you could add lemon slices to the water and them remove before pouring it into your bucket. That is how I make my household cleaner. It is a very nice lemony smell.

I only use the washing soda, borax and fels naptha. Can you give us the recipe for one with baking soda?

Yes, I grate and boil the soap til it melts before I mix it (let me tell you, a stick blender works SO well for that!!!)...I had not thought about putting lemon slices (rounds, or quarters?)...
MUCH easier. How many lemons do you use? I usually make a double batch of laundry soap--so it makes about 4 gallons, and fits in the 5 gallon bucket with a gamma seal lid quite nicely. One lemon? Two?

I just add a cup of baking soda, in addition to the other powdered ingredients. I know I'm not the one that you were posting back to...but I figured I'd add that.
