Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ok - I know this has been discussed in the past but looking at the bread/clothes dying/whole foods kitchen threads I thought I would bring it up to get some feedback from other ladies here. First of all let me say I have been journeying toward a more simplistic life for some time now ... not necessarily with the enthusiasm of family. When I say a simplistic life I definately don't mean simple because it is a lot of work, however I have found it is work I enjoy to my very core. I am wondering if anyone here "homesteads", is working toward sustainability AND home schooling. How does it work for you? How do you incorporate all the daily chores of your home / animals / gardens etc and get "school" in. I see the daily routines and care of the animals etc as important, the growing of our food, learning to do for ourselves as real education.   I guess I just haven't been able to figure it all out - how to really make it work. Dh travels ALOT so it really is up to me - and I don't mind that but since I am prone to biting off more than I can chew so to speak I am curious if others are traveling down this same road and if so what has your journey been like - what is it like today???
I hope this makes some sense - I have been mulling over this post for days because I wasn't sure how to get my point across.

I can't get to far down that road myself Wendi. Simply, it's not our highest current priority. So we're living in town and I have a garden but no animals.

I do have a friend who is making a business out of her farm.. it's not self sustaining yet but they're working that way.

Partly it's that you can take control of you schedule.. daily, yes, but also yearly. Think back to when the one room school houses would be open when there was enough less work that the children could be spared from home. Winter is a great time for more acedemics for instance and probably mid-summer too.. And when you are doing the big harvest and preserving marathon.. it's probably a good time to take off from school. So you plan your times off for times when you know there's more work to be done rather than the conventional summers off or holidays off or such.

Practise.. it takes a lot of practise to get the kids doing their jobs on their own without someone looking over their shoulders.. the more you can get everyone working independently the easier it will be to get things done in a timely fashion.

And then prioritizing the school work. So that the things that most need doing get done first. And if you know you have a slow time coming up on the farm.. you can plan extra school stuff into that time.. maybe that would be a good time for a unit study or other concentrated study of one subject..s o that you can start and finish in the time you have instead of spreading multiple subjects out over the whole year. Say you do your 3 R's everyday.. but then during a slow time you can do a big study on The revolutionary war.. or physics or whatever.. you do that for the 3-6 weeks you might have a slower time.. and then you're done.. and you don't have it hanging over you to finish when things get busy again.

That is a very good point Jodie - thank you. I do think about how things "used to be" but I have a hard time bringing that into "today". I guess it's like getting rid of the "school at home" metality and endeavoring to educate our children in a completely different way.
Great insight!!
