Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do any of you grow sprouts? I was scared away from it several years ago by news that some sprouts (of an unidetified kind, and I can't remember now if it was grocery store or what) had spread e.coli. Somewhat alarmist, I think.

Anyway, if you do sprout -- do you do beans or other seeds? (I believe I have seen radishes sold for sprouting purposes in seed catalogs?) Is there anything billed as "sprouting seed" that I should avoid?

You don't need too much light, do you?

We sprout alfalfa and mung beans because they are the easiest and go well with our style of eating (stir fry, pitas, wraps). You didn't ask about methods so you may already have a sprouting system, but if not I'll share mine as I just typed it in for a friend.
For the mung beans I use a large
pitcher The bottom is covered with beans, warm water added and it sits for 24 hours on my counter. The next day the water is carefully drained, beans are rinsed and drained and the top goes back on with the lid turned to strain to let air circulate. I rinse twice a day, leaving the lid on and set to strain, and turn the pitcher on it's side on the counter to give the spourts more room. The pitcher is dark, so light entering is not a problem. Alfalfa are sprouted in a bell jar with a sprouting (straining) lid http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51HLkBranzL._SL75_.jpg These are kept in the cabinet by the sink.

We love sprouting our own seeds for salads & sandwiches and it's so much more convenient and economical than it is to buy them...and so much more fun! We get our seeds from http://www.johnnyseeds.com/search.aspx?SearchTerm=sprouts and have had great success. They have a great variety to choose from and you can try them and see which your family likes best. We've never had a problem with bacteria, but I think that the trick is to keep your container very clean and rinse the sprouts often. We use a canning jar with cheesecloth over the top. Works great for us...good luck!

We've gotten radish sprouts at the grocery store.. they're good but are spicy.. just like eating a radish. I bet you could mix some with alfalfa if you wanted just a little spicy.
