If you had space to make a play room for your little girl (off of the kitchen where Mom could see while cooking) would you? Or, would it work better to set space aside in the play room where big brothers (8 and 9) play?
And, if you did set up a play space for littles (girl now...maybe more later) what would you include in it?
The space is not that large but has a lot of natural light. A piano will likely have to stay in there, too.

A baby... so I am planning ahead. Right now she simply hangs out with me. Part of me thinks this will continue and she doesn't need a separate play space.
Truth is, I sort of forget the early years (especially since my first two are 11 months apart- it is sort of a blur).
(If I don't do this planning I will start revamping their school work and since school is working out just fine...)

Oh I would.. because then you have the option of gating off the boys area and keeping a little one out of legos and other choking hazards.
I usually keep toys for the littler ones in the living room (I have a corner I use) right now I have a bunch of little people they pull out and cover my living room with  When I have a smaller baby I usually keep true baby toys out as well.. things they can chew on and what not.

My daughter is three now and she's always been pretty happy to be with me. I've always had a kitchen cupboard set aside for her and as soon as she was old enough to safely stand on a chair she's been up at the counter with me helping. My daughter spends probably 75% of her free play time pretending to be me or some other grownup so I wouldn't necessarily invest a lot of time or energy in creating the perfect separate play area but work instead on making the kitchen really friendly for her: a cupboard with tupperware and wooden spoons, empty spice bottles, etc.

I'm with Susan. As a mother of girls, they have all loved their little kitchen corner with a small table. They don't just have to cook there, but can color or build little puzzles together at the table. Make sure to hang a little apron on the corner of her little kitchen cabinet  Mine have outgrown that corner of our kitchen and now work at the "big" table with me. Tracey, it is not too early to be thinking about this. She can start stirring in her little bowls before she can walk! Oh, how fun! I would love to have such a little corner once again.
ETA The 2 youngest still play with their kitchen/market counter, but it is upstairs in their bedroom and no longer in/next to the kitchen.
