Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am wanting to buy a new casserole dish and I'm thinking a dutch oven is what I've been seeing in the shops here for this purpose.(think cast iron bright red outside and coated inside...and really really heavy ...empty!) So would I be right the terms are synonymous in the states?

I'm looking for the kind of item that you can cook a beef/chicken casserole recipie in the oven instead of using the slow cooker which we also have but I find doesn't cook things as "tenderly" as it used to do.

We had a Pyrex casserole dish(3litre capacity)but it cracked one day in the oven so I am wary of buying another could I even find one and china of any sort seem hard to find.

I don't know what your budget is, but when I was married I was given a Le Creuset oval dutch oven. I have been married nearly 30 years, and this oven is still one of my favorite cooking dishes. It works fabulously as a slow cooker. I do add a little more liquid than I would use in our crock-pot, but I think it produces a more tender meat. Right now I do not even have a slow cooker, just this dutch oven. I set the oven at 300 degrees F for "high" and 250 degrees F for the "low" slow-cooker settings and I can basically do any slow-cooker recipe in it. It is large enough to roast a whole chicken or a substantial cut of meat. It is enamel coated, so I know we're not getting lead in our food. It is very heavy, but I think that helps distribute the heat evenly and it is extremely durable. I love it!
