Yes me again last post for the day I promise
healthy snack for a very picky boy . this is a kid who wishes he could eat baloney & white bread everyday . also had to see a specialist and go on meds for 6 months due to constipation ! he will absolutely put off eating for almost a whole day . to get him to eat supper tonight was a struggle and he really was just waiting for the cinnamon buns to be ready ! we do not often have any type of white junk bread or processed meat but if we do he'll sneek in the fridge and just eat the meat ! he will eat carrots but get this likes only those yucky prepeeled ones that look like pinkie fingers .
I'm bound and determined this new yr. this child is going to eat healthy each day. I am also a small eater so I understand the whole small quantity thing but the food going in most be good. he likes red pepper & cucumber , for fruit apples , banana , wateremlon , rasberies, honeydew mango . we live on the prairie so most of the fruit he likes we just cannot afford this time of yr. ideas for fruit and veggie snacks would be great . he likes tortilla chips and mild salsa . no cheeses what so ever .
really I should not complain he is our angel child . This may in fact be his way of rebellion for all I know because he truely never argues , fights etc.
you'd think with this being child #6 and I being granny I'd have this all wrapped up ! Lov , Rox

Have you tried hard white wheat to make whole wheat bread that isn't so strongly flavored or darker in color?

This is a tough one for me, too. My ds,8, I think is addicted to junk food. We don't have a lot of it in the house, but whenever we have just a little, he sneaks it, even getting up in the middle of thenight. And he too will not eat rather than eat something decent. Here are some things that work. None of them work all the time, but changing strategies when one fizzles helps us keep things in check. And for anyone who wonders whether just letting ds eat his "forbidden food" would work, I'd say no. There are behavioral issues at work that override natural regulation.
Take son shopping to find healthy snacks. Put them in a snack drawer and allow free access to that. Suggestions would be granola, fruit cups, applesauce, dried fruit.
Periodically find a new way to present nutrition and engage in it as a conversation, like, "gosh can you believe some people don't drink enough milk? I bet those kids have a lot of broken bones, don't you?"
Let son help plan menus and meals and help fix meals. I was a picky eater as a kid until I had to start making the meals, and suddenly, things tasted a lot better.
Get the bad stuff out of the house.
Best of luck.

ds is very good with brown bread , he won't eat crunchy but brown is ok what a silly boy . I guess being the youngest it may have been his way of recieving a bit of attention I love the idea of a snack drawer or container ! We used to bring him along grocery shopping with us all the time and we would let him have say in healthy snacks but since we now once again have a l;egal age babysitter on board we have been going off on our own without the kids to shop . I think bringing him along again , giving him some control in the situation being responsible in his own health is a great suggestion .
I also remember the Canada food guide had a section a few yrs back we did with our older ds when he was this age . an online form where they partake in choosing foods they enjoy from all the food groups .
Thank You for the boost Ladies

My kids have all liked peanut butter on whole grain tortillas. Weird, I know...my 5yo is very, very picky, he lives on a few foods. Popcorn, string cheese, whole grain crackers, peanut butter on wheat bread, bananas. Sometimes he will eat some grapes or a little apple. It is very frustrating. As far as the constipation goes, my oldest has chronic constipation. Nothing to do with her eating, she is a good eater. We have taken to mixing fibercon (actually the generic version) in something each day. It works like a charm, as long as we remember to use it each day, otherwise she gets blocked again and we have to use something a bit stronger. Anyway, this stuff is just fiber, it dissolves completely and is tasteless. She mixes it in juice or yogurt, but you can mix it in any liquid or semi-liquid.

A while back my family did a lesson on nutrition and it helped them alot. We made up little flash cards for each child which were color coded for each food group and each person got one card per daily serving. (We even went so far as to color the fruits and vegetables so that they got one green, one yellow, one purple etc. for the day.) On the back of the cards, we put a column of choices that would qualify, and a column listing what organs of the body it would help if these foods were eaten. As they ate their meals/snacks, we put their cards into an envelope which was taped to the refrigerator so that they could keep track of their nutritional intake for the day. Needless to say this was a real eye opener...for Mom and Dad too! It let the children see where they needed work and exactly what would suffer if they didn't at least try!
Now, they ask for more red peppers and hummus dip!
other ideas: yogurt and fruit with granola, like a parfait...they think it's ice-cream
popcorn, made on the stove with only oil and a tad of salt (mine like it with nutritional yeast on top, or taco seasoning, italian spices, etc.)
dips, dips, dips! Any raw veggie tastes great with ranch dressing, hummus, bean dip, spinach dip, etc, and apples with pumpkin dip is great too.(pumpkin puree, cream cheese or thick yogurt and ppie spices and a dash of maple syrup...yum)
edemame (soybeans in the shells, the kids love to break 'em open to see the "baby" soybeans)
let him make up his own trail mix of his favorite whole grain cereals, ww pretzels, dried fruits and nuts, and then one fun addition like maybe mnm's. Then portion out small servings into little cups or bags and make sure he finishes it before he gets another bag !
These are some of the snax my children enjoy. I look forward to seeing some new ideas on future posts!

My picky eaters enjoy smoothies. In fact, I got an immersion blender for Christmas and it has made smoothie prep super easy! No blender to clean!
I use skim milk and any combo of fruit that I have around. We have good luck with frozen blueberries, frozen very ripe bananas, other berries, cantalope, and even peanut butter and a sprinkle of cocoa powder. If you're inclined to add protein powder the smoothie will stick with them longer. Sometimes I can even sneak a pinch of milled flax seed in there. That fiber might help your son.
I make a protein smoothie at bedtime for my picky and very early rising 3yo and he sleeps better, too.

I second the smoothie idea! Once in a while I add green max powder for extra antioxidants. It turns it a St. Patrick's Day green...the boys call it swamp juice...adds to the appeal I guess.

I sneak in frozen greens to the smoothie. Raspberries keep the color pinkish. Start slowly and build up to the most you can get away with.
Also, see if your library has the book Deceptively Delicious or the Sneaky Chef. It worked here.
