Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

oh my Alison, and you're "down south" where it's summer this time of year.

Would you happen to have an electric roaster? That's what I do in the summer.. cook my ham or roast or beans in that ON THE PATIO so that it doesn't heat up the house.

Basically I just bake (or roast in the roaster) a ham according to the directions for time per pound and near the end of that time.. coat it with a glaze if I want that. I have a lovely dill mustard sauce that I buy that makes a simple glaze.. or just honey with some pineapple slices.. or if I'm feeling fancy I'll score the ham and put in whole cloves at all the corners and then glaze or nothing at all.. ham is good by itself.

Then depending on how much your family eats.. you can have a ham dinner that first night.. and then slice and dice up the rest for all sorts of yummy food like ham sandwiches, omelets, fried rice, scalloped potatoes with ham etc etc.

Alison, ham is already fully cooked, so you can serve it cold or reheat it. To reheat in the oven, it usually takes about 1 hour for a larger ham at 325 Fahrenheit. I like to glaze a warm ham with a mixture of brown sugar and mustard and a small amount of cloves. As Jodie noted, pineapple glaze is delicious, too! And her dill mustard sauce idea sounds really tasty. I found a recipe for Honey Pineapple Ham at cooks.com that looks yummy and festive. It depends on the ham Caroline. I usually get the cheap cook before eating types.. but I forgot that.. it may be a reheat one, not a needing to cook one.

I didn't know there were uncooked hams! Well, as my grandmother used to say, it's a poor day you can't learn something! If they're cheaper, I'll definitely keep an eye out for them.

I have used the crockpot to cook my ham before. It turned out very good.

thanks for all the responses. I think it will be "cured" but I was remembering how mum always cooked it anyway and was wondering if that made it last longer. She had this flour casing she pasted over it and then cooked it in the oven and I remember the flour thing was hard and had to be "hacked' off.
I love the idea of the glaze too to make it more flavorful.
