Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I get overwhelmed and anxious thinking about it. We will be moving over/just after Christmas - not exactly sure yet where we will be spending Christmas this year. I keep looking a some particular area and think, "I could just pack this up right now" and then a minute later think, "but what if I need this or that from it."    If I continue with that logic, nothing will be packed till the day we move!    Any suggestions for moving a household of 12 people, one of them a emotional pregnant woman, one a level headed logic minded man, and ten uber excited children???

number boxes and pack up and make packing lists for each box..

1 - books - category and/or author and/or titles (I recommend cetegory vs individual book lists)

Then if by chance you did really need that item or two.. you can just look on your lists and have someone find the right # box and get your item.

if you have an extra room you can put boxes in.. great.. otherwise..start tucking them into corners or behind the couch etc.

I second what Jodie says. Definitely # and list. I *didn't* do that, thinking "we'll be outta here so fast I'll remember what's in everything... here we are months and months later and I have NO IDEA.

I don't have any other advice, but I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you again how excited I am for you! I want to live vicariously through you too, so don't forget to share lots of details and pictures.

I wish that we'd done the number thing with our last move. Then you can pack with confidence knowing you'll be able to find what you need. AND it will organize your unpacking. Just unpack in reverse order and you'll be unpacking the most important items first. You might be able to declutter a whole lot of stuff that way, too, when you realize that you haven't touched boxes 1-10 in six months.

Yes, of course, numbered boxes and lists - I remember that from the Duggar book. Excellent idea. Amy, I will take lots of pics in the new place, and while I don't want to right now, I will take lots of pics here before/during/after the move. I know one day some kids will want to see them, and I probably will wax nostalgic myself.

Any thoughts on getting the little ones okay with the idea? They are excited now, but ask questions sometimes that indicate to me that they are also confused and a bit nervous.

When my oldest were little.. we explained to them (pretty much over and over) that we were putting things into boxes to take with us.. that we'd have a different house and different yard.. but everyone was going to be together and all of our things would go to the new house.

Let them pack up a bag with their favorite things to keep with them (not leave behind) and then have them help pack the boxes.. that helps make them less intimidating.. and also includes them into the hustle and bustle (even if you have to go back later and neaten up boxes

Oh and most importantly with small children in the house.. TAPE THE BOXES.. pretty much as soon as you fill it.. tape it. Or you'll find that you're repacking boxes over and over.. and try not to stop with a box halfway packed.. but it's still easier in the long run to tape a partially filled box and open it to finish filling than to leave it open

Is it too unaffordable to get your movers to also pack for you?

When we moved, we found that it didn't add a huge amount to the cost to get them to pack as well. Maybe it's different over there though.

We found it invaluable. The thing is that professional packers do it just like machines -- whereas when it's your stuff you're always thinking 'Let me just find the other one of those' or 'I'll just mend that before packing it' or whatever and it takes forever...

As for helping littles to understand, there's a nice Usborne book called First Experiences which has a little story about moving. We found it quite helpful.

Do you have several days to move or just a few? How far is it? We moved over a weekend with lots of stuff in storage, garages parents etc. We were a mountain of boxes for weeks. I had a friend who over a week or so moved almost a room at a time and she was done and moved in at the end. Remember diposable dishes and take out pizza are your friends. Annie

I'm excited for you, Lisa!!! This sounds like a great place, and that is what you need to keep your eye one...how much nicer this will be for all.
Logistics..start with closets...they are usually full of things you don't see for weeks, months at a time, and your kitchen cabinets.
Moves are just like weddings and childbirth....somehow, whether we plan well or not...they are pulled off in the end!!
Keep us updated!!!
