I've been devising my own "Mommy's Christmas Wish List" (planning to get all the shopping done before Advent) and thinking that a gadget for dicing all those onions would be nice since I tend to get careless with the knife. (I also tend to peel off fingernails when peeling carrots!  )
Is there an onion chopping gadget you like best, like a mandoline? I've been reading reviews on Williams Sonoma and they are awfully mixed. Any recommendations?

My in-laws bought me a cuisinart this past summer and I no longer hate chopping veggies.

I've always been impressed with the demos for this food chopper from Pampered Chef, though I haven't broken down and purchased one. My friend who has one loves it.

Are you looking to slice them, or dice them? Slicing, I would recommend the Ultimate Mandoline to slice them, as the blade stays flat until you slide over it with the holder. For dicing I would also recommend the Food Chopper since you can dice them big or small. Something I have noticed that if the knife is really sharp, I am actually less likely to hurt myself. I have fallen in love with the Santoku knife, especially the 5" one. I am pretty clutsy sometimes, but I even like the really big 7" knife.

I usually need to dice onions for soups and stews so it's looking like the food chopper would be suitable. I do have one from IKEA that I use for nuts but it's not really big enough for onion. Looks like the one at Pampered Chef is bigger 
I'm also reviewing this video How to Dice an Onion
I've been doing it all wrong !

yes, sharp knives and the proper knife for the job make you LESS likely to get hurt.. when you use the wrong type of knife or a dull blade you have much less control because you're having to "muscle your way" through the task.
I don't use any of the food choppers.. I'm not satisfied with the ability to clean them without a dishwasher.. so if you have a dishwasher this warning isn't needed but if you don't then you might want to consider that.
Also, toss your onions in the fridge for a bit before you chop them. The oils are what irritate your eyes and being cold they don't spray out as much and you can take more time without irritating your eyes.
