A neighbor gave us a big bag of walnuts from his son's tree. He normally lays them out in front of his woodburning stove to "dry". I don't have any sort of clear, horizontal space in a warm area to do that.
So, can I just lay them out on a few trays in the oven on a low temp? What temp? How long?
Or better ideas?

do you have a gas or electric oven? and does the gas if it is one have a pilot light?

hmmm I think keeping it turned on might be too hot for drying.. but maybe warming it up some and then turning it off?

My aunt and uncle have a walnut tree (great memories as a climbing tree growing up  ). They give my parents tons of walnuts every year. Anyway, they lay the nuts out on the floor around the furnace to dry. Sounds like you probably don't have that kind of space. Is there anyway you could make stacks of nuts (like on layered trays) in a warm area (near furnace, heating vent, sunny window) that wouldn't take up as much space? I don't think drying in the oven is recommended as even the lowest heat setting is too high (shouldn't be above low one hundreds). Air ciruculation is, as I understand, more important than heat.
I found this county extension recommendation sheet which suggested suspending from ceiling in "beathable" bag in warm area.

Yeah, Jodie....you're right about the too-high-heat....that document mary linked said nothing above 105 degrees. And, the rest of the house never gets above 65. So, right now, they are just sitting on cookie sheets taking up room all over the house, and my kids just keep eating them and the toddler is throwing them.  I guess they don't care that they aren't crunchy and dry. I'm pretty sure this isn't worth it,  but....if anything it's a food science and nature lesson, right?
