Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

to paint my family room... it has tan carpeting (ugh) and the walls are sheetrock with molding toward the bottom and the little tiny paneling about three feet from the floor. It's all painted off white... what colors would make it calm and cheerful?

yes, calm and cheerful. lol... is that a color contradiction? I'm considering doing them different colors, but not sure... I think I like warm colors best... it doesn't get much light at all.

ok so warm colors but you dont' want to go to very dark colors or the room will close in on you without much natural light..

I would make the tan carpet an asset.. and go with a tan on the paneling.. if the carpet is very dark, go lighter.. then use a more vibrant color on the walls.. something like a mustardy yellow (not a bright yellow) or a burnt orange, maybe a red like a faded brick red.. an antique blue (if you don't find blue makes you feel sad) can be a warm combination with tans. Green will probably blend with the tan too much. And then you start picking up the vibrant color in other places.. put a throw rug on top of the carpet in front of the couch for instance that has that color in it.. decor like throw pillows or blankets for draping over the back of the couch.

What color is the furniture you have for the room? that might help you find a color.

No furniture yet, so it can be anything...
Thanks Jodie, I've been looking at different shades of tan online. The carpet is light tan, so I guess a dark tan would look good?

yes though working with the carpet is better than a good color that doesn't work.. but you might want to keep it light just to help the room not feel dark and depressing.. then you can add, again on the lighter side, a cheerful color to brighten it up.

You might want to get some of those paint samples where you get a few tablespoons of paint that you can put on a patch of wall to really see how it will look.

And I think I'd look around for a rug and things and see what colors you can find there before deciding on the other color. It seems to me reds and blues can be found pretty readily but the other colors seem to change depending on what's "in style". But accents don't have to match perfectly they can be lighter or darker or even a bit different shade.
