I put them in a coffee cup. The coffee cup can be put into the dishwasher when it gets icky. Of course, we only have 4 kids toothbrushes to keep track of.

Ditto--coffee cups are easy to use for multiple brushes and easy to clean.

even with many.. I agree, a cup works great.. I prefer plastic ones or if you have space for multiple ones.. I got a toothbrush holder that I REALLY like but it only holds 4 brushes.. it's metal and has no bottom just like 2 rectangles with uprights.. you put the toothbrush in and they're held at the bottom and top so that they don't tip over. That's probably not real clear.. but I really liked it.. you can pick it up and wipe under it easily.. I got it when we were in a hotel as temporary houses for our last move.. when I only have 3 littles.

Right now I use coffee cups, one in the kids bathroom and one in master bathroom. But when I had many more children at home I used individual plastic cups. Each kid had a designated color of cup, matching toothbrush and toothpaste.Once a week I'd pop them all in the dishwasher. It worked very well, but I had a much larger bathroom sink counter then, too.

This is what we do too. Each person has a plastic cup with their toothbrush in it. These are contained in a shoebox-size plastic container that's sits on the countertop next to the sink.

This topic is very dear to my heart for a very sad reason. We had a dear friend lose their 2 1/2 year old because of bacteria on a toothbrush. They would store the toothbrushes in a drawer in the bathroom. This is NOT SAFE! (The bacteria was growing on the bottom of the drawer, so even with new toothbrushes the bacteria went unnoticed.) You need to leave your toothbrushes out to dry and change them very often! We do the cup thing with the toothbrush head up and drying. If you don't have much space on your bathroom counter, get a plastic shoebox and place cups inside then maybe you could have a small shelf where the shoebox is stored? Just shooting ideas for you
Good luck, toothbrushes can get messy fast!

Ours are in a large coffee mug on the counter.
Also in regards to keeping them clean, we soak ours over night once a week in Listerine.

Mimi - how did they ever trace it back to the toothbrush? Very scary.

Lots of investigation. The parents were very diligent and cleaned (a lot more than I ever do at least). The doctors knew it was a bacteria that had entered through the mouth (she had a cold sore or some other type of open sore) so they just kept at it and found the bacteria. I hope I didn't sound too extreme but I never had any idea about this and just wanted everyone to be informed.
So what do you think Lisbet, can you store the toothbrushes in cups?

I have a friend that uses a wooden caddy that you find fancy edged scissors in. It spins and has lots of slots. We just use 2 four slot toothbush holders plus the 2 littles have toothbrushes with suction cup bottoms. Annie

Brilliant!! I just purchased this scissor caddy! Makes so much sense, and it looks easy enough to clean. I'm so glad I asked here!

We do the toothbrush in the cup thing...but I love the idea of corralling the cups further into a shoebox. That would SO help the counter mess.
I like the scissor caddy too...but we end up with those fat handled tootbrushes sometimes, especially when you get the freebies at the dentist's office.
Thanks for the tip

Oh, yes, so do we! What a pain! That's why we ended up going with the cups.

We store ours in individual glasses for everyone here.
As a tip, we like to throw all of the toothbrushes (color coded for family members) into the dishwasher weekly, along with the glasses they rest in, PLUS I also place all of the brushes and combs in the untensil divider as well. Often we remember our mouths and cleanliness but how often do you hear of folks washing/disinfecting their hair tools?
Easy as pie. Even our youngest toddlers were successful with this weekly chore duty. ;-)

My mom always had us soak brushes/combs in hot water and ammonia, probably about once a month.
I never thought of throwing the toothbrushes in the dishwasher. I usually try to change them every 3 months and they are stored upright in a holder, so not too bad, but the dishwasher sounds great.

What a great idea!
I tried boiling a toothbrush once to disinfect it, but the head partly melted and the shape distorted.
I usually replace a child's toothbrush after the child has a cold to prevent re-infection. The boiled toothbrush fiasco happened after a cold when I decided to try something different. I buy lots of extra toothbrushes for just such events.

Oh my gosh, death from bacteria on the toothbrush, that's so tragic! Ew, I want to go clean my bathroom...heaven knows it needs it.
A bit unrelated, I have become irritated with time, and adding more toothbrushers, at the cost of replacing toothbrushes so often..not just the "every three months" thing, but when my little kids chew one to a pulp, or throw one in the toilet (sigh), or get strep throat. Today I was at the Dollar Tree and realized that they have toothbrushes there. Now, many of them are off-brands and look pretty cheaply made, but some of them were name brands, probably discontinued styles and such. The kids ones, especially seemed to have fadish kids tv characters and such and probably landed at Dollar Tree when their show faded in popularity. :) I bought a bunch today,,,it'll be nice to have one actually on hand next time I need a replacement!

The scissor holder is working wonderfully! I hung it on the wall and placed 4 toothbrushes in the front and 4 in the back (the toddlers brushes are in the kitchen cupboard so they don't run off with them...) and the tube of toothpaste right on top. Thanks!
