Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I came across Cay's post Kitchen Anointing this morning I think by the hand of the Holy Spirit!!

I love to bake and do that often. But I almost always finding myself dreading the late afternoon because dinner time is coming. (As an aside at the momente it's only dh and myself. Baby won't be here for another few months and even then she won't be eating with us for quite some time!)

My dh LOVES his food and I've started feeling bad about dreading this task. I started reading Kimberly Hahn's "Graced and Gifted" and just finished her chapter on preparing food last night. And then today's post from Cay!

It really helped (start) to change my heart about this very important task we as wives and mothers have.

Would you care to share your favorite recipe books with me? I really want to prepare food that makes the house smell wonderful and is nourishing for my family. My poor dh has said to wait until he gets home from work and he'll help with dinner. I don't want that! He's worked hard all day and I want to do this joyfully and provide a nourshing, yummy home-cooked meal for him. And stop suggesting that we just go out and get something whe I'm too lazy to prepare

I know I've made this same comment before, but one thing that is really helping me is using my slow cooker. I'm using it for both breakfasts and dinners. I've gotten mosst of my recipes from A Year of Slow Cooking.

I have "free" time in the evenings after the kids are in bed, and that's when I get the ingredients ready for the next day. I'm preparing a monthly meal schedule to make this even easier. I load up the slow cooker with a breakfast recipe and it cooks all night. It is wonderful to wake up in the morning to a warm meal! This in itself makes for a stress-free morning. I only have one slow cooker, so after breakfast it gets washed and dried and new ingredients put in for dinner.

I don't use the slow cooker everyday, but it has tremendously cut down on kitchen stress.

Thanks for sharing, Jen! I am not one who loves to cook. It is definitely an act of service here. I needed the inspiration too! And I just happen to have the ingredients needed for Jambalaya...thank you, Holy Spirit!

Jen,

You didn't say if you are currently working outside the home but you, at the very least, are growing a baby and getting ready for a huge life change. So give yourself permission to say that you also are going to be tired at the end of the day. I've found it tremendously helpful to do ahead anything that can be done ahead. Vegetables can be sliced in the morning, dinner rolls can be baked in the morning, ground beef can be browned in the morning, etc. You might dread the dinner prep hour a bit less if you only need to assemble the food you've already cooked.

When I was engaged and first married I relied heavily on 30-minute meal cookbooks. I knew the recipes would be quick and usually contain normal ingredients. I cooked my way through almost an entire cookbook in about a year and I learned a LOT about cooking. I was able after that to make substitutions with confidence and whip something up from the pantry much more easily.

Is your dh a great cook, by any chance? Mine was/is and I had to sort of be humble about that and learn a lot from him in the beginning. Then we got to a point where our abilities were the same and he handed things over to me and now only cooks on holidays. But if he is offering because he loves to cook or is really great at it maybe you should think about taking him up on his offer--even just on the weekends. Or you can do your part to have the kitchen clean, table set, and ingredients out when he is home. It might be a good time to transition to cooking more independently before your baby arrives.

Good luck!

Susan

Susan thank you for the suggestions! My dh isn't a *great* cook he just knows how to do a few things. He was being sweet to offer to help out in an area he knows isn't my comfort zone yet. But I don't work outside the home so I feel like it's part of my vocation to provide in this way.

I do have to say if I have ideas of what to make it's better that way. I just need to change my mind around to seeing this as a providing an important part of our family life.

I do like what you suggested about getting as much done early in the day as I can. And I'm going to see if I can find any 30 minute cookbooks at our library! Thank you!!
