As these lovely dark fall evenings approach I am focusing on a beautiful dinner table - our tablecloths are looking very dingy and worse for the wear.

Can anyone recommend a good source of everyday tablecloths which are hardy and wash well - and which are affordable.

Thank you

Marilyn

Marilyn,
The ones that I have are from April Cornell. They are a bit pricey. However, if you sign up for email updates, etc., they will notify you of sales and such, and often you can get them at great prices. I do have one that I bought on ebay as well.

I have found that their fabric wears well (I wash them in cold water & line dry), and b/c of the lovely patterns, hides the stains that I missed when I tossed them in the wash.

I have on occasion seen April Cornell (and some other lovely brands) tablecloths & napkins at TJ Maxx. Happy shopping!

Wow! Those are lovely! I have these spill-proof ones.   They really are spill-proof, and so far they've washed well.
I love the way tablecloths look, but someone's always pulling on them, making them look messy.

I'm not quite sure how to quote, (haven't taught myself yet), but I agree!! Especially when we have curious little crawlers, tugging at the cloth, wanting to see what's up on top of the table!

Those tablecloths at BB&B are so nice...A color for almost every season! My paternal grandmother always had beautiful white linen tablecloths on her table covered by a heavy-weight plastic cover, which I've considered getting. I loved meals at her house just b/c her table always looked so lovely w/those cloths! We pretty much do everything during the day at our DR table, so I take off the cloth, shake it out, fold it up and put it over a chair until the next meal. Having that tablecloth back on, and usually a lit beeswax candle in a hurricane holder too, for a meal somehow seems to transform our all-purpose table.

I buy all of my tablecloths from either Ross or Marshalls. You can get an amazing array of very nice tablecloths. Last year I got a gorgeous one right around Christmas time made of linen.   I have also gotten beautiful runners and place mats. Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday when they restock and are less crowded.

Good Luck and post when you find some nice ones.

Oh and BTW they have some gorgeous aprons of all different styles too!

If you can sew a simple seam, you can buy table cloth fabric.. it's the width of a standard table cloth and you pick the length and you only have to hem the cut ends.

Thanks everyone - I like plain colors generally. I like the BBB spillproof - I will check out the tablecloth fabric with my Joann's coupons - I guess I could manage to hem the ends. There is a Ross not too far - I just seem to get overwhelmed in places like Ross and Marshalls - I am not a good shopper at all!

I used to do a neat thing with our tablecloths. I would put a pretty tablecloth on the table and pin the corners around the leg of the table so it would stay put and littles left it be. Then I put a heavy duty piece of clear plastic purchased at Joanns on top of that. We would then slide holy cards, memory work and such between the two. I have no idea why I ever stopped doing that...

I have one similar to the BB&B table cloth, but I have a HUGE table that seats 10 so I needed a better price. I found one at Overstock.com that is the same spill-proof microfiber for $25 and they almost always have free or cheap shipping. I entertain a LOT (3-4x a week) and have small children, so it is a workhorse of a table cloth. It takes a lot of abuse and washes beautifully. I have white and there are no stains.
I love your idea about pinning around the legs Lisa. I think I'm going to try that on our smaller kitchen table.

Here is my table cloth. I bought 5 1/2 yards of yellow fabric for the Fall. The placemats match it so well.

This is what I do too, except that I don't pin it, I buy plastic large enough to cover the overhang of the table cloth. Heavier plastic usually doesn't slide or pull, and stays flat. The plastic lasts quite a long time and wipes clean easily and well.

We have been trying a few months without a plastic cover as our last one finally got too worn, but my dc make an absolute mess and so I'm going to buy a new piece of plastic this week.

We have periods where we place posters beneath the plastic too, of birds, planets etc. but for special ocassions when a 'special' tablecloth is on, say for Christmas, we take them out.

Interesting thread...we have an ugly cheapie wipable thing right now. My kids can sure junk up a table. When we were reading Little House on the Prairie, I noticed how they remove the tablecloth for meals and put it back on afterwards! Now that makes sense!
