Due to an error (my fault) in my food coop, I just purchased 100lbs. of oats! I already purchased 50 lbs. last month. That makes a total of 150 lbs. of OATS! I have rolled and steel cut. Anyway, I need some help with oat recipes. I usually use them for cookies, breakfast bars, or bread. I hear that there are recipes for apple crisp using oats and oatmeal in the crock pot. I would love to get good recipes for these. ANY other good recipes using oats would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

In a 2 qt baking dish, put lots of chpped apples. I don't peel them, nor have any sort of measure, just fill the dish about 2 - 2 1/2" high. Even old apples work, as do a mixture of kinds. Whatever you find rolling around the back of the fridge *S*. Sprikle 1 t. cinnamon, 1 t. water, and 1 t. lemon juice on top.
Mix well: 1 c. rolled oats, 1/4 c. flour, 3/4 c. brown sugar, and 1/2 c. softened butter. Sprinkle mixture on top of apples. (There's usually a little too much, which is great 'cause I love to eat the topping straight *G*). Bake at 375F for 25-35 minutes until top is golden brown. Best eaten hot with vanilla icecream! ENJOY!"

additional notes: I have been using my pampered chef round baker (stoneware dish). I fill it about 2/3rds full. For the topping I always double the entire recipe and use every bit on the apple crisp. This last time I used 1/4 c. of white flour and 1/4 c. of whole wheat flour and it was yummy.

another note: I just used a pastry cutter to chop the butter in, instead of trying to really mix it in

I think you can also use it in place of bread crumbs in things like meatloaf.

I'm a bit envious.. 75lb of oats is on my wish list.. but it has to wait for the money for me to put in a bulk order.. no co-op here so I need to make a large order to keep the shipping reasonable.

Jodie where do you order oats? I have always gotten 50lb bags from our co-op but now we don't have one. We usually eat oatmeal every day all winter and granola all summer but I have no oats!

Christine if your kids like oatmeal I'd make that a standard breakfast this winter. You'll get through it faster than you think. We can easily eat 50lbs in one winter and your family is bigger than mine!

But those are both west coast (ID and OR) the shipping is usually what drives the price up. You may want to hunt for something further east to order from. Also check in with any stores and see if they'll let you order.. some will even give a 10% discount if they don't have to break up a case or whatever.

oatmeal: baked. crockpot. stovetop. every morning.

I have 4 little kids and we eat oatmeal just about every day and I'd say that we go through 150lbs of oats just in oatmeal a year.

I've found adding butter and salt improves the flavor when cooking on the stovetop. canned fruit, frozen fruit, dried fruit, spices and nuts make great additions. Somedays are sweeter, other days (like Friday) more plain. (when you bake it, you add eggs - a good way I found to get rid of eggs recently - leftover, you can pour milk over it and eat it cold; it's like a chewy granola; my kids newest favorite way to eat it).

re-reading the replies - we also use oats in our meatloaf, hamburgers, etc in place of breadcrumbs. Some I put in the food processor to make it finer - can also be added to bread that way. You can make oat flour and bake with it.

A Scrumptious, Moist Oatmeal Cake With Broiled Topping

Combine and let stand for 20 min.
1.5 cup boiling water
1 cup oatmeal
(or substitute 2 cup leftover cooked oatmeal)

Cream together;
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or marg.
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teas. vanilla

Sift together and add to creamed ingred.;
1.5 cup flour
1 teas. baking soda
1/2 teas. salt
1 teas. cinnamon

Blend creamed and dry ingredients together. Mix well. Add oatmeal mixture.

Pour into greased 9 x 13 baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

While cake is baking, cream together topping ingredients;
1 cup brown sugar
4 Tabl. butter
1/2 cup room temp. milk
1 cup coconut
1/2 cup finely chopped nuts

When cake is baked, spread prepared topping over hot cake and place under broiler until topping is lightly browned. Watch carefully because once the topping starts to brown it can burn easily. This cake actually gets more moist as it sets. It's really yummy the second or third day, if you're able to keep any around!

Raspberry Oatmeal Bars

Mix together;
3/4 cup softened butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
1.5 cup flour
1 teas. salt
1/2 teas. baking soda
1.5 cup uncooked rolled oats

Pat one half of above mixture into greased 9 x 13 pan. Press down, making sure that mixture doesn't go up the edge. Spread 10 oz. jar of raspberry, or any other preserves, again keeping away from edge of pan.
Crumb remaining crust mixture over the top.
Bake at 44 degrees for 20-25 min. Cool before cutting.

Christine, your post reminded me of a family joke that arose when we had a glut of oatmeal in our household in the 70s. There was a sugar shortage that year, but my mother happened to stock up on bags and bags of rolled oats. She would tell one of my brothers, who reminded us all of Buckwheat from the old Little Rascals, "We's low on sugar Buckwheat, but you can have all the rolled oats you want!" Ever after, whenever we happened to be low on sugar, someone would sing out that silly refrain.
May you and your children enjoy similar fond memories of the year your family had all the rolled oats they could possibly want!

Oats are really wonderful in bread! I add a cup or two of oats to our six loaf recipe...oatmeal makes the bread even nicer for toasting. I like Stephanie's idea of processing them into flour, but you can also add them as is. The most I'm ever able to get at a time is 5 or 10 pounds at the Amish store. Enjoy the bounty!

Enjoy your oats, Christine . Just thought I'd mention...to store bulk bags, you might want to look in the pet food section of any department store. I picked one up with wheels to store my bulk dry milk, bag and all.
