Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are renting our new house but we hope to rent it for a few years and then maybe buy it so we are looking into making a few minor improvements. The kitchen is nice and big with plenty of storage. The cabinet are brand new medium wood with white knobs. The countertops--also new--are a beige granite-look laminate with white and dark brown flecks. The floor is brown/cream/yellow/orange/gold maosaic-print linoleum c. 1974. It's in good shape but not exactly pretty. The lower half of the walls are white subway tile with black trim along the top. The top half of the walls is white wood paneling with some gold and pink "grain" design. I guess.

From a design perspective the wood paneling is my least favorite and the subway tile is my favorite aspect. But the subway tile still doesn't work with the floor or, really, the counters or cabinets. But we are thinking that painting the wood paneling might help a lot.

What color? And any tips on painting wood paneling?

I can't decide if I should try to match the sort of ugly floor so that everything in the kitchen will be the same sort of yellowish palette but the subway tile won't go. Or maybe do something really bold above the tile to get some color in there on the idea that nothing is going to coordinate no matter what we do.

This is kind of frivolous but I know some of you love this kind of stuff :)

Susan

Paint it, and you'll love it! We have painted paneling in several homes with great results. Be sure to wash the paneling well with a de-greaser first and you'll have no trouble. I'd go witha bright yellow or even orange; kind of a retro look. Post pictures--we'd love to see it.

I'd say something bright and cheerful too - but do NOT use bumble-bee yellow - much too bright (I've posted about this before). It's a great color for accents and other SMALL items. NOT for what you're looking to do.

I second the de-greaser idea. I've also lightly sanded - and used primer.

And the linoleum? Years ago my mom laid wallpaper over it, and varnished with 5 or 6 coats of marine-grade varnish. Stunning!!

I've also heard of painting linoleum. Just de-grease, sand, prime, then paint. After, you would want to add a couple coats of varnish, but I think it would be very durable and cheaper than a new floor.

Or for the floor, you might be able to get those peel and stick tiles for the floor for not too much of an investment.

Thanks for the ideas. I hadn't considered doing anything about the floor. Dh actually thinks the linoleum is really cool so I'm not sure he'll agree to spend any money on it. But we'll see.

Wow! That IS a melange of styles!!!! Wood paneling, 70's linoleum, subway tile?????

I think I'd sand and then paint that wood paneling in a high gloss white to match the knobs on the cabinets and the white subway tiles. I guess I sort of thought white because maybe/possibly/in a dream world you might one day convince the landlord that investing in some nice hardwoods or laminate would be a good investment in his rental property and it sounds like your kitchen is a fairly neutral color them otherwise. Landlords might be more open to forking over the cash if they see that you are trying to make their rental property MORE of an investment by making it more attractive to a wider spectrum of renters - so I was thinking neutral.

Also, just so you know, Susan, from experience, lighter colors work better on paneling because they tend to camouflage the bumps and texture in the paneling - your eye tends to look past them. These tend to really stand out with darker, deeper colors. Keep that in mind.

Add some neat retro touches for decor. You could probably find some really unique and attractive items at a local thrift or flea market. I'd think you would just need a few bold items to make a statement. I guess I'd just live with the floor, esp if you husband likes it. Painting the paneling would be easy and high gloss creamy white would bounce so much light around the kitchen. I love cheery, sunny kitchens!!!

Greased lightning. You can get big gallon jugs of the concentrate at Home Depot/Lowe's.

Our kitchen has c.1970 gold/brown laminate counters that I really do not like and when we bought the house they really stood out against the white walls and white cabinets. I have since painted the walls a bright, apple green and the counters are much less noticeable - but still coordinate with the green - so I would go with a bright color on the paneling to de-emphasize the floor.

Hm. Good ideas. Thanks for playing along! Everyone I've verbally polled has said "bright orange." My sister offered us free surplus paint from their new house and my husband is finding that sage green looks like a great color     I also sort of like the idea of bright white walls with bright colorful curtains. Right now we have dingy white vertical blinds that we're hoping our landlord will let us take down.

Sagey Green would look really lovely above the subway tile. A medium color looks good on paneling and helps disguise imperfections, as Jennifer suggested. Color can do a lot to emphasize nicer design elements in a room...you'll notice the white knobs and subway tiles stand out even more with a stronger color introduced into the palette. If you can find any paint web sites that allow you to color your own picture with paint, it might be worth a try. (I think Valspar has that feature). Sage Green would be an easy color to pick up elsewhere for accents throughout the room... valances, plates or pictures on the wall, herbs on the windowsill. Have fun re-designing your kitchen!

I'm assuming this is the 60's-70's era thin wood panels? And since it's in the kitchen, be sure to paint with an enamel paint- this allows you to wash the walls down without having to repaint over again. And kitchen walls really do need regular washing, otherwise they get that dust/grease amalgam that's so hard to scrub off.
