Does anyone have a recommendation for a good iron? My last few have not been very good...spitting, too cold, too hot, etc.

My husband also likes to use starch on his pants. This has produced a build up on the iron. This buildup will then sometimes rub off on other clothes if the iron gets too hot. I've tried cleaning it with some sort of "iron cleaner in a tube" (very descriptive, huh?), but it didn't quite get it all.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I could have written your post - we've been through the same issues.

I think I've decided that my next iron will be a Rowenta. They're very pricey, but I've thought I will get it at Joann's with a 40% off coupon.

My sister has one and it works so nicely and hasn't given her any problems. When I visit her, I've used the iron and love the way it works - and it's size - it covers a much larger surface area than any others I've used.

Well, I just use an el cheapo iron. But to remove the starch buildup- heat your iron to it's highest setting. On a plate place a folded up washcloth or piece of old towel- terry cloth. Soak it with white vinegar. Place the hot iron unto the wet cloth, avert your face- the vinegar fumes are strong. Hold it there a minute or two. Without letting it cool, use a metal scraper to scrape off the sludge. You may need to do it more than once, but it works like a charm.

I have a seamstress iron from JoAnn's that has held up very well for the last 5 years and still going strong. It has a very crisp point and can get very hot.

To remove buildup, rub the hot iron with a crumpled ball of foil.

Rowenta. I bought ours at Costco. It is a great iron. My mother, who is a seamstress and has owned cheapo irons her entire life was thrilled when she visited and used our iron. So thrilled she ironed a huge basket of clothes for us! Seriously, though, it has been worth the extra money...it's very sturdy.

To Diana C and Lisa D: Thanks for the recommendation! I will be looking into it soon.

Also thanks to "mcchatty" and LeeAnn for the tips. They sound very helpful!
