Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I bit the bullet this past weekend. I squared my shoulders, and ventured into the basement, emerging with box after box opf unsorted, unlabelled photos(20 years worth). I arranged a row of bankers boxes, affixing labels with Scotch tape- one for each kid, one for family vacations, one for "pre-kids", one for family sacraments, one for extended family. Kids pitched in and we spent TWO days sorting pics into boxes. I set up a file system for negatives.(a bankers box with a folder for each year- buy the small manila envelopes at Staples for this)
Once we had the boxes, the big kids took their own and arranged them in (what we hope is) chronological order I made separate albums for all of our sacrament pics, and one for Christmas. One tip- buy the 3 ring albums that allow the pages to be removed, makes it much easier when you "find" a new born pic and you are already at "confirmation".
My plan, from now on, is to make a specific album as soon as we return from a trip, or a sports season, or what have you.   Next, I need to go through all the digital picture files (6 years worth) and do the same thing.
How do other people organize their pics? Am I the only shameful slob that's allowed them to lay fallow in the cellar?   Any hints for staying on top of it?

This is one of my favorite topics. Here is how I redid my photo organization system.

It was a small investment but totally worth it as you can see by the pictures and it has been almost effortless to keep up with. http://motherlyloving.blogspot.com/search/label/homemaking
