Main living areas (living room, dining room, family room where applicable.) I'm looking for standards, not to feel better about how often I currently vacuum
So this question is mainly directed at people who are happy with the results of their frequency of vacuuming. Or if you aren't happy with how often you actually do it but have a goal that has worked well for you when you do meet it.
Also, what kind of rug do you have and do you find it makes a difference to how often you have to vacuum? I don't think we have the tightest weave rug (wall-to-wall carpet) but I also wouldn't describe it as shaggy.

We vacuum the main level daily after dinner. Our carpet is old and worn down. We have two dogs, plus a food throwing baby, so I would actually like to vacuum twice a day.

I have a Roomba so "I" vacuum each room every few days.
It was worth the investment to buy "him." I had hoped to manually vacuum edges and places he doesn't get, but it hasn't materialized.
Kitchen (hard floor) gets done pretty much daily as does dining room (carpet, low pile like a Berber) since we eat there. Family/Living (again, low pile, softer than Berber) I try to do once a week. Er, uh, I mean I have Roombie do.
Bedrooms are done weekly. I do find my hard floors (kitchen and bathrooms)show dirt and dog hair more than carpet, hence they get vacuumed more often. Also, they are main traffic areas.
If I didn't have the Roomba I doubt much vacuuming would get done.

We vacuum every Saturday all carpeted areas (low to medium pile) and whenever necessary under the dining-room table and the main entrance area. Bathrooms and kitchen get swept daily, and floors get washed weekly.

I vacuum twice a week. Most of my house is hardwood, though- and I sweep the kitchen/dining areas a few times each day, and the rest of the house twice a week. Seems to work for us, but then, we have no pet hair to account for.

We vacuum weekly and sweep our wood floors (dining room, kitchen, and entrance area) twice a week. But we don't wear shoes at all in the house, which really cuts down on dirt.

I vacuum our downstairs daily. It should be a chore assigned to my children, but I get it done before they wake up in the morning.
Shoes come off at the door to minimize the dirt and everyone eats at the table to keep crumbs in one area. It's mainly because of pet hair that I do it so often, but Teresa loves to walk around to eat her snacks.
Vacuum upstairs once-a-week or more frequently if needed.
Regular carpeting with large area rugs on top

I vacuum daily. Although a mess really drives me CRAZY, lately I have been thinking that maybe I vacuum to avoid doing other things. It is an easy way to feel I have accomplished something.

We vaccuum once a week on Saturdays ... but I can't wait to have a house with ALL h/w and just area rugs that are easy to clean (I hate wall-to-wall carpeting) ...
BTW, it's funny you posted this today as according to our Learning Calendar, today is the day the first vaccuum was patented! How cool is that?????

Due to ants, we vacuum daily and sometimes multiple times. You would never know it. Dirt and crumbs take over at rapid fire rate at my house due to my inability to keep everyone at the table while they are eating and to enforce shoes off once they come in the house.
ETA: But this is not with a big vacuum just a shark type thing and our carpet is berber which does hide the dirt... but man is it getting dirty.

Or maybe it has nothing to do with your inability, Maryan. Maybe it has to do with the fact that you have 5 BOYS.

I vacuum upstairs (short carpet)once a week, unless there is a problem. Downstairs (wooden stuff) I vacuum at least 3 times, and sometimes every day. We have a dog, we have a no shoes rule that is flouted from daddy down, messy crafty children and DH hates dirty floors. When DD (2) was mainly living on the floor I vacuumed at least once per day and sometimes more, but now I tend to aim for every other day.

My sister once heard a recommendation that one should vacuum once per week x the # of people in your family. Obviously, a rule made up by someone with 1 child. . We vacuum once a week, unless something really dreadful happens. I'd like to do the main level more often, but it isn't happening right now.

We only have carpet upstairs in the bedrooms and downstairs in a finished basement. All else on the main floor is wood or tile laminate.....no pets....shoes off inside generally....so we only vaccuum once a week!

Great topic.
I vacuum once a week upstairs, 2-3 times downstairs. I think it could actually be done daily downstairs. We live in the mountains and there's a lot of dust and dirt coming in through the door at this time of year.

In Canada generally folks don't wear shoes in the house...but still, it gets pretty windy and dusty here in a prairie city and we have a big urban garden so we track in alot of grit. So I sweep, or kids do, the main floor hardwoods usually daily (or when I start to pull my hair out ), and the area rug on the main floor gets it whenever I haul the vacuum down, usually 2-5 times a week. The upstairs and stairs get it once a week only now...
Funny, with young kids and less schoolwork I would do the whole house every day, with babies! Crazy I know...

We have all hardwood downstairs (except for an area rug in the living room) and we vacuum twice a week downstairs with some spot vacuuming in between.
Kitchen - gets vacuumed after every meal. Seriously. (but don't be too impressed...I keep a smallish electric vacuum in my pantry for just the kitchen - it's not terribly powerful and has nothing extra, but it does great in the kitchen and is easy for the kids to operate. It's part of the kid's rotating chores to vacuum the kitchen after every meal...someone does dishes, someone else vacuums. We spot clean during the week with this vacuum as well.)
Upstairs it's a lot of Berber carpet...it gets vacuumed weekly.
