My almost 10yo dd and I want to learn to knit this summer. I'm a leftie, and so is she. My mom, who is right-handed, tried to teach me a few years ago and I just couldn't get it. How should we go about this knitting thing?

Jennifer, I'm a leftie and it really is no different learning to knit ... the one thing you want to really focus on is that there are MANY ways to hold the needles, cast on and knit ... the important thing is getting the right look of the stitches and feeling comfortable doing it.

I am a leftie also but find knitting doesn't feel awkward in any way since both hands are used. It's so much fun! If one method doesn't work for you, find another.

i am a knitter, and what really helped me when i was starting out was the book stitch n *** by debbie stoller. sorry for the title, but it is an excellent beg. book.

when learning another helpful thing is to look up what you are stuck on youtube. everything is there from cast on, to purl. have fun!

One of the best books I've found, referenced in the above blog post, is the First Knits book -- the illustrations are clear, directions easy-to-follow and the projects are pretty fun. Another one is Kids Knitting from Melanie Falick ... a classic in my opinion. You could also try some of the various DVDs out there for knitting -- the public library usually carries those ... maybe if you see it and read about it that would help?

Many small yarn shops will help you out if you buy your stuff there. Sometimes it took me just someone to say - hold it like this - that made the difference. I also checked kids knitting books out from the library. Have fun!
