I noticed the electric tea kettle in Marilyn's pictures of her newly organized kitchen and it piqued my curiosity regarding general pros vs. cons of electric tea kettles and regular stove top tea kettles. Any thoughts?
If you have a tea kettle that you love, (electric or non) would you mind sharing what kind it is. Thanks!

From a previous thread I bought the kettle MicheleQ recommended.
It seems the white version is not available, but there is a black version.
No complaints. I bought one for my dh for his office, too. It's pricey, so I waited for gift-giving time, but we're very pleased.

Charlotte - I would not live without my electric tea kettle. When we moved here from the UK I was horrified at how hard it was to find an electric kettle. There was only one available at a ridiculous price. ( In England at that time you could get them for $10) I have found that they are not as sturdy as the British ones - I have been through 4 in 11 years - whilst in England I used the same one for 15 years.
We use it for tea, coffee, to speed up boiling water for cooking (eg pasta)
There are several choices now.

Would you mind also sharing why you prefer an electric tea kettle over a stove top one? Does it heat faster? My stove top is a flat ceramic top and a small tea kettle heats within a few minutes but I have heard other people swear by the speed of an electric one. Are there any other benefits to electric?

We have an electric stovetop, only 2 burners. Stove kettle takes a much longer time to heat up, and I don't have the room to keep one on the stove all the time. Dh tended to leave it on the stove boiling, so there was some safety features.
I use less electricity (it shuts off when it is done). It takes a shorter amount of time to boil. This week when I was making the dyes for pysanky eggs, I could boil the batches of water in no time at all (mine holds 7 cups), so my project didn't have to wait. The kettle handle is never hot to touch. I didn't grow up on electric, but I would have a hard time going back.

How funny! I just clicked over here after ordering a new electric kettle from Amazon. My Braun, which is the one that Michele recommended that Jenn referenced above, just died a couple of days ago.  I liked it while it lasted, but it only lasted 15 months.
After much deliberation, while very eager to replace it since I hate microwaved tea, I decided on this T-Fal model. I like the stainless ones, but they had more negative reviews or were much more expensive.
The thing I really wanted was this. Talk about pricey! But it would be great to keep the water hot all day without using any electricity. Maybe someday.

I used my T-Fal electric kettle daily for years and years and couldn't live without it, until we moved to our present home which has a Kitchen Aid Instant Hot at the sink. Now I don't know what I would do without IT!
My mother still uses a stove-top kettle and it takes so long, uses so much more energy, and monopolizes 25% of the burners. She's always having to find a place to put it when she needs all four burners.
When my Instant Hot stopped heating last year I brought the electric kettle out, but darling hubby ran off to buy the part and restored my Instant Hot to me the same day.  Lovely man!

OK Charlotte - I use an electric kettle because it is quicker, easier and I have always used one since I was a child!!
Brands I have used:
Melita - really did not like this one - but only choice I could find 11 years ago
Proctor and Silex - did nto last long
Braun - probably the best I have had
I now have this Hamilton Beach one from Costco

Hey there Charlotte,
We love our electric tea kettle, esp. Bill who loves a good cup of PG tips almost more than I love my coffee! 
Our old electric kettle died a year or so ago and I found
this one at Target right before Bill's birthday--it was clearanced out and it works really well! The red color is bright and cheery, too.
And yes, the electric tea kettles heat large quantities of water much, much faster, I have found...

Well, you ladies have convinced me. I am a tea drinker (sometimes coffee) and Husband is a coffee drinker on the weekends but we use a manual coffee maker so we still end up using the tea kettles a lot! We need to replace our large one and I think an electric kettle is the way to go. I still use a small one for myself during the day. It heats 2 C. in 4 minutes. Does that sound like what an electric kettle can do?

My mom loves her electric kettle (I don't have the counter space). She gets hers in Canada for much less than the ones around here (Virginia, USA)

Hi, Charlotte!
We use a very cheap Rival Hot Pot (price about $13 at the grocery store). We've had this one for at least a couple of years; my dh wants another one because he's sure this one can't last a really long time, but we've had no problems with it.
Pros--very simple. Fill, plug in, wait about two minutes, unplug.
Cons--no "base" (e.g. some pots can be removed from the base which is the only part you plug in), only holds four cups at a time, mostly plastic (which is probably true for the vast majority of these electric kettles).
Now, we don't use it to heat anything but water, so for us it functions solely as an electric kettle, not a "mini soup-pot" kind of thing.
If nothing else, this might be a way for you to try an electric pot without spending $$$; that way if you didn't like it you could go back to stovetop, and you wouldn't be out a lot of money.

I like the bigger kettles because:
my husband will make a thermos of tea to take to work
it makes enough water for lots of hot cocoa all at once
we use it to speed up the process of boiling water on the stove for pasta
As I was shopping for one earlier this week, dh and dd13 reminded me of these things when I suggested a one cup at a time kettle.
