Hello,
I am starting to think of summer plans. We are finishing the Little House books and the girls were very impressed by Laura and Mary's sewing abilities. I am tossing around the idea of having each of them hand sew a quilt over the summer. Working on it daily for 15-20 minutes morning and afternoon. My dds are 4 and 5, closer to 5 and 6 by summer time. Does any of you wonderful ladies have any books or websites you could recommend? I do not quilt myself so I need very simple explanations. I know I can do it it's just that I don't know where to start...
And I don't know what size to pick: pillow case, baby doll quilt or their own bed quilt... I like the whole bed idea but I am afraid of the frustration that might result from it since I really want them to learn to sew by hand before they learn to use the sewing machine (that I don't have anyways!).
Also any ideas of something special to do with 3 yo ds while the girls are quilting would be very much appreciated.

Mattie--I don't quilt either, but I have been lookig around at a lot of patterns with the desire to try it out. What about letting them each sew squares (and you along with them) and then sewing them together into a family quilt at the end?

My kids have enjoyed sewing cards beginning around 2 or 3 years old. When the sewing cards have become too easy, I have given them pieces of burlap each with a simple shape (star, flower, house, etc.) drawn on it and let them sew around the shape with yarn and a big, plastic needle (like these).
We haven't gotten farther than this yet, but once a child can sew around a shape on burlap fairly easily I wouldn't think hand sewing a small block quilt would be too much of a stretch at all.

Either burlap or canvas "sewing". BIG squares, regular yarn...

I would say the project needs to have quick gratification for their ages. Do they both have little dolls they could make doll quilts first? I agree, larger squares may help depending on how big you want it.
A friend of mine is doing an ABC quilt with her dd and stitching pictures for the letter she is learning, Maybe that wouldn't be a summer activity, but a through the year craft that they can stitch the squares together as you go?

yes, we have done the sewing cards and the thick plastic cards with a drawing on them and we are just moving to fabric sewing (dd 5 already made "hats" for her doll from flannel). I like the idea of a family quilt... Definitely got me thinking... Or maybe the dolls one but they don't have a bed for their dolls... Still brainstorming!
