My 7 yo. wears holes in his socks like nothing I've ever seen. 
He got multiple pairs in his stockings at Christmas... and their all holey (would that his socks affect his soul... okay corny).
Back to my dilemma... I think I'm getting sturdy socks (gray bottoms and sometimes I spring for name brand gray bottoms) but I seem to get the same effect. Really, I've only caught him outside twice without shoes -- he wears these socks out in his shoes? I don't know if he yanks on them? I've had the same socks for YEARS with no problems!!!
Has anyone found a sock brand that will last an active boy at least one year?????

My nine year old only gets a few weeks out of his socks too. It's awful. I haven't found a brand that holds up to him yet. Just consider socks part of your disposable products budget.

We have that issue in a serious way here - but it's because we have old hardwoods and the nails come up here and there - catching all of our socks. Could there be something somewhere on your floors, like at the thresholds and such that may be catching his socks?

My boys are very active and wear socks everywhere...including outside with no shoes. I've been so EXTREMELY pleased with Auro Socks from Target. They have little gold lines on the toes to distinguish the different sizes. I have one son who is extremely particular about tags, socks, shirts...all the tactile stuff. He will only wear these socks, but now I buy them for both boys because they last so long and hold up so well.
I think one set of socks lasts at least a year. I just had to buy new socks because both boys grew, but as I was going through the old socks I was thinking they look worn, but there are no holes. Amazing. I know it's been at least a year since I bought those socks.
I buy church socks and everything in this brand now! Worth a try!

at least in winter we use smartwool socks.. they last my sock eating heeled children better than anything else. And we all love them. They cost more.. but I can even hand down some of these.. and I get them at discount stores so I figure that I'm not really spending any more on them than I would cheaper socks.. and they sure keep our toes way more comfy than anythign else (and I dont' wear wool usually.. itchy.. and I wear these.. definately not itchy)
Anyway, I can have 6 pairs for each child for October through April/May and only lose a few pairs the first year they're worn.. so that I can pass down 2-4 pairs of each size to the next child (or same child, just another year)
Then I just get cheap ankle socks for the summer months when we need socks (like for sports, camping etc) but all of us tend to be barefoot or in sandles/clogs in summer without socks. So even the cheap socks can last more than one season.

We wear slippers in the house as we have old icky floors also.
But I do review socks as disposable. I buy the big pack of anklets at Walmart--1 pack for my dd and I, 1 pack for teens, 1 for little son.

Since we live in Miami we rarely use out socks because we don't wear them except for with sneakers. That being said I buy all my socks from Marshalls or Ross or TJ Maxx because even not using them much, we go through them like water.
Anyway my $.02

When you solve the holey sock problem which we also have, can you then solve the holey pants problem, too? I think he must walk on his knees if it's not the socks.

I've used gymboree socks for all of my kids. I have never ever noticed any holes. If you live near an outlet, you can buy 4 pairs for $7 usually. My girls are all wearing "hand me down" socks from big sister and they still look great. Much cheaper from an outlet than from the retail store.

Oh Maryan I am so glad you posted this...I had the same post question in mind! Yes...everything we buy gets holes. We have done those Auro socks Jen mentions. I think they were a bit better, but they never lasted a year. Oh and I've NEVER had a girl get holes in her socks, like ever.
I think it just shows how incredibly hard they play, indoors, outdoors. And as far the flooring goes, my house, except for 3 rooms, is wall to wall carpet, doesn't matter. I think for one or two of them, it might be their stink that is making them dissolve  . My kids never tie their shoes. They slip their feet in and out of their shoes, which I think stretches their socks.
I have no answer...but like Bridget, I consider it a purchase that has to be made every 3 months. I stretch it further when the summer comes along though

Yes, I only buy Auro as well. They last and last. I've actually passed them from my older to my younger.

Jenn, give up on the pants, especially if you're buying sweatpants or knit pants. My son used to wear a hole in the knees of brand new sweatpants the day I brought them home. He hated (and hates) jeans and other "stiff" pants. I patched when I could and just took him around with holes in the knees. (We had church pants - duplicates of weekday ones but sans holes.) Even school uniform pants (with reinforced knees) wore out pretty quickly, although those lasted a fair bit longer.

And Jenn, I'm thinking your little man must do more praying than my boys because I didn't get holes in the knees until oldest turned 6. The little boys clothes made it to boy #4 before getting holes in the knees!

Nancy, we rarely do knit pants, as they are too hole prone. It's the dress pants, school pants, jeans, etc. Nothing works. I'll throw in the towel. I admit, I do make him wear some of the holey ones on other occasions when we're down to one good dress pair of pants.

crawling around with hotwheels and other vehicles (and toy animals) seems to do them in here.
But then I've noticed that up to about size 4T you can find boys pants in good shape at garage sales and the like.. after that if you happen to see any in good shape you can bet.. either the boy didn't like them so didn't wear them or they were purchased right before a growth spurt and got little wear.

we have practically no pants (definitely no socks) from our older son to pass on to younger after this size (4/5). We also have no shirts because he developed a habit of chewing on his shirts while working on Legos, etc. Luckily he outgrew that, finally. So, I guess this younger child will be nekkid.
Once Upon a Child has practically nothing in pants for that size, as well.

Maryan, I too have the hole in the socks problem. We are the same as you for pants--we lasted until about age 6 without holes in the knees, Andrew is wearing hand me downs from the older two.
I have a sneaking suspicion about my boys and their socks. I think they stick their fingers, pens, pencils, and sometimes scissors in the bottom of them as they do their work or read. It's kind of a habit I think, like hair twirling or drumming fingers. I have scolded, but I think it's one of those things. Of course, that's only part of the problem. Now that the boys are older, they wear them 'harder" and play sports more often, and change them less often.
