Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK. I am making a set of rocking chair cushions for my friend Liz's glider. I am making them from scratch to match her nursery decor and because this glider never had a set of cushions with it when they bought it 11 years ago. I decided to go with Nu-Foam instead of high density foam. Here is my question. Should I cut the seat to fit the chair perfectly or should I cut it a little bigger so that it can be nice and tight in the cushion cover? I'm thinking it should be cut to fit figuring that I could always wrap it with batting like I would high density foam if I thought it needed to fill out the cover better. But I don't know for sure so I am looking for some help. Anyone have any experience with this?

I've done it both ways, Charlotte...though I've never used Nu-Foam...I'm going to look into that!

I like the feel of the cushion I made and wrapped with batting...it's softer. It was much easier to stuff and sew for. BTW, I might be too late, but an electric knife is soooooo great for cutting foam nicely - don't know if you have one, but thought I'd mention it just in case!

I do have one and was going to use it. It's what they used to cut it in the store. I found a .pdf file that says to cut it to the size of the chair and the cut the fabric with a 1/4 inch allowance but sew it with a 1/2 inch seam so that it will be nice and snug. Thanks for the help!

One more question... the fabric I bought says it is 100% cotton but it also says dry clean only. I want her to be able to wash the cushion covers whenever she wants to. Any reason why I shouldn't wash the fabric? It is a light canvas type fabric but like I said, 100% cotton.

If it were me, I'd wash it on cold and delicate cycle. I might line dry it instead of using the dryer. But, if it's going in the nursery, she's surely going to want to pull it off and wash it sometime! Better to pre-wash!

definately pre-wash the fabric BEFORE you cut it

And I'd probably wash it on warm and dry it.. and then tell her to wash in cold and hang dry it.. that way it's less likely to react after you give it.

Also when drying for a cushion.. sometimes it works best to put it back on the cushion still damp so that it can stretch back to the proper shape.
