I'm so frustrated with vacuuming. I think it is partly our carpet--the people before us put down the cheapest carpet that exists, the fibers are "sticky" and just seem to grab on to the lint and etc. So I can vacuum something four or five times over and still have to bend over and pick the little thing up! Also we have a dog. I was "shouting out" some spots the other day and pretty horrified at the amount of hair that was scrubbing up!
Anyway I don't have money for an expensive vacuum right now (or even an inexpensive one, to be honest!), but I am just frustrated with not being able to get the floor clean! What I really want is hard floors but that is way, way in the future!!

what's under the carpet? I've heard of people who've pulled out icky carpet.. and painted and sealed the floors underneath.. not put down anything special (expensive) maybe you could do something that would work better and not cost more than an inexpensive vacuum.
hmm or I do have hard wood floors and so a lot of the time I'll just sweep off the smallish area rug we have.. and me and all the girls have long hair.. and I noticed when my house broom went missing.. that the stiffer garage/outdoor broom really would ball up the hair off of the rug so much better.. so maybe just getting a real stiff bristle broom and periodically sweeping the carpet in addition to vacuuming.. it's work but it would be cheap.

I don't know what price range you mean by "cheap", but I have a Bissell Healthy Home that I love. I got it on sale at Target with a rebate and it ended up costing $150 or so.
It doesn't use bags, and the filters are cleanable. Dirty filters or full bags will really cut down on suction, so if you can take your old vacuum apart and clean off the filters (old toothbrush, paintbrush, or canned air should help) it might start sucking again!
We use the broom on our carpet too. It's easier to sweep the carpeted stairs than it is to haul the vacuum up and down them!
My Bissell has a "pet wand" but I don't use it that often since we don't have furry pets.

We have the #3 Consumer Reports recommended vacuum - The Eureka "The Boss" Smart Vac. It usually runs around $150, but my hairdresser told me she got hers at Kohl's on sale and with a coupon for $115, so maybe watch the ads. It has 3 attachments and also a HEPA filter, which I love. (Dust allergies ).
Also, if you don't trust yourself to take apart and put back together your vaccuum, find a local vaccuum repair shop to service it. Usually this is less than $30, and it comes back like new, maybe better.

servicing it--now that's an idea--!!
remodeling--half the large living room is 1890 and probably nice fir floor (We uncovered a bathroom and BR upstairs and painted both floors), but the other 1/2 is a 1960 remodel so who knows!! Anyway I'm concerned it could be quite cold--and also maybe the "tilted floor" thing would show too much--the carpet we have is actually very new, installed right before they sold the house, it just is cheap and poor quality. But I think we'll be living with it for a few years until it wears out. I had a complete surprise this weekend when my mom dropped a vacuum at my house that my sister left when she moved. It is the exact same model as mine (hoover tempo widepath), BUT for some reason, tho it sounded horrible like a freight train (mine is quiet), the suction was way better. What an unexpected blessing! However, the entire house smelled like dust afterward so . . .?? I'm not sure if it just sucked it all up and spit it into the air! The carpet looked good, anyway
this vacuum was also highly rated by CR, which is why I bought it, even tho it was only about $60. now it looks like I have 2 that need serviced!

Just a practical hint - I've taken our vacuum apart a couple of times to find legos, army men, etc.
Take pictures with your digital camera. I took one before I started, right after I unscrewed the first screw, and before each step. Then I knew which order to put it back together again.
