Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do you simplify *all* your meals during Lent, or just Fridays?

If you do simplify, how do you do it/ what do you do?

This year, ALL of ours will be simplified, except for feast days, but this is something we are moving towards anyway (though Lent will continue to be much more extreme). I really want Lent to stand out as the pentitential and preparatory season that it is. Now if I could just get Advent worked out....

One thing we are doing is cutting all sweets and such to only twice a week - during Lent, it will be Sundays only. Desserts during the rest of the year are ok as long as they are not loaded with sugar and junk - but during Lent, no desserts, except Sundays.

I'm looking at really basic meals - think pioneer times - for Lent. Breakfasts will be oatmeal, cream of wheat, or similar with fruit and a protein (sliced cheese is the kick around here). No cereals, no sugar (though some sweetener is allowed - I cannot eat plain oatmeal, though that would make an excellent penance for me!).

Lunches/Suppers: no meat at all during Lent. We have already cut back to meat once a week during the year (not intentionally, it just happened), so I feel that Lent should be stronger on this one.

Thick slices of highly-nutritious bread with a warm bowl of soup will take care of most our Lenten meals. But I'm sure we'll break out of that and do some simple pastas (my son loves pasta with a touch a olive oil and salt) and veggies on the side. Fruits are snacks around here so we don't do them at meals, except breakfast.

Those are the only ideas I have put into place thus far. We'll see how it goes! I'm looking for other ideas as well.
