Are they buying any food or just eating what they bring?
I always bring: granola bars, juice boxes (weigh less than water bottles -- but 15 yo don't necessarily like them), and trail mix.
Shelled sunflower seeds give you something to do on a bus ride -- you just have to have a bag to throw out the shells.
Apples, bananas, muffins, and sandwiches can get smushed easily unless you have hard cased stuff -- but we have done those too.

Last year we did sandwiches. One thing that worked great for us was a stainless steel thermos full of hot chocolate. It stayed warm the whole day. We were really happy to have it.

I was going to pack apples and healthy/hearty oatmeal cookies that are moist and won't crumble ... and the thermos is a great idea MC!
We're going with the parish but won't have time to cook dinner when we get home so we'll do take-out on the way home to feed the troops before Thomas has to go to Young Marines .... which they moved to tomorrow night instead of the regular tonight

On our trips into the city we always take apples and granola bars as a snack. They are heavy, but the sugar gives you a pick me up and then you've also lightened your load. Sandwiches with chips (I dump a big bag of chips into a tin) or leftover pizza and water for lunch. Halloween size peanut and plain mnms--several each for an afternoon energy burst. We're usually home by 5. I do have the advantage of having a double stroller to haul all the food.
The kids begged for Lunchables tomorrow so no sandwiches. And we always stop at Starbucks for a hot choc in the wintertime.

Lindsay, I also play with the flavors a bit.. like I can use cranberry sauce in place of apple sauce.. and add dried cranberries and walnuts.. yummy and very different from the apple sauce with chocolate chip variety
