Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Any tips or recipes on making a good pot of overnight crockpot oatmeal?   I followed a few of the recipes from the Fix it and Forget it cookbook, but it was so slimey with very crispy edges. I'm not using quick oats either. Where would I get steel cut oats in bulk? All that I find at Kroger and such is a tiny little can for mucho dinero!

Whole Foods sells steel cut for about $1 per pound.
I put 2 cups of oats, 2 cups of apple juice, 4 cups of water, 1 chopped apple, handful of raisins, and dash of cinnamon. I delay start my crock pot so that it cooks for 5 hours, on low (but my low is still very hot--older crock)

I use a plug in timer (like for Christmas lights) to delay start.

This feeds my family with 2 teenage boys, a hungry husband and a few pickers.

My health food store sells it in thebulk section for .89/lb. I now get it in a 25 lb bag through a local co-op.

Oatmeal cooked using this method has been a hit with my family. Even my husband has been eating it!

AT Amazon grocery you can buy a 50# bag and ship for less than $5.

bulk oats

Is that too much bulk? (pun intended, of course)

Lisa--The amazon deal is a pretty good one. WE buy it and split it with another family. Also, Nissa has a grain order going at her Hearth and Home co-op.
My kids are not much for crockpot oatmeal, but here is a favorite recipe of another sort:

Baked Oatmeal:

Mix dry ingredients (I do this the night before and leave them in a ziploc):
6 cups oats
2 tsps. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2 tsps. cinnamon
1/2 c. brown sugar

Add:
2 c. milk
4 eggs
2/3 c. oil
2/3 c. honey

Mix well. Bake in a 9 X 13 pan at 350 for 30 minutes. Serve in squares sprinkled with raisins or nuts, or cover with syrup or apple sauce as desired.

This is so yummy, tastes like oatmeal squares...warm, filling and can be flavored to individual tastes easily. I sprinkle mine with blueberries and flax, the kids like syrup or apple sauce, dh likes walnuts and raisins. But it's a favorite all around and we eat it once a week.
