Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have a suggetion for a unique kitchen gift (to go under the Christmas tree) for an 18 year old young lady who dreams of running her own catering business?

Hmmmm...depends.

About $30 but I also have some Amazon dollars so it could run a bit more if ordered there, but I still have to divide that by 5.

I was searching and found this cute Holy Toast Stamper

I'm also interested in any online kitchen shops that I could window shop throughout the year.

Thanks for your help.

Oh, anything French-style will do too.
She's minoring in French and dreams of going to Paris.

Cay,
What about Madeleine pans? They are French...
Depending on which size you order, two pans would be about $30-$40. I just did a search for them at Amazon and they have a nice selection.

I found some silicone ones at TJ Maxx and they worked the best for me.. but then again, I am not a French Chef, so I need all the help I can get to prevent baked goods from burning :-). FWIW, my nonstick Madeleine pans[/URL] were very good for even cooking, but I couldn't get it right with the tin ones.

I have received gifts ordered from Fantes.com.   They have such a nice selection of items that I certainly do not find in the rural area where we live. Even their measuring spoons are ones that I haven't seen in local shops.

Advent Blessings!

I second the suggestion for Fantes. They have wonderful stuff!

Also La Cuisine

specific French items I love:

brioche molds
Matfer tart tins with the removable bottoms
Apilco or Pillivuyt porcelains (for mini-souffles, ramekins, etc.)
a cannele mold has been on my wish list -- have heard good things about silicone but I haven't taken the plunge but for some Silpat mats

and I try to check out the sales at

Bridge Kitchenware
and Sweet Celebrations every now and then.

My husband is a FOCUS missionary and one of his teammates this year is a French national. It's so fun (and educational) to have her around! Her most precious cultural item is her scarf! She's always wearing a scarf, which she says is just typical attire in France. You can usually find nice ones at a place like Marshalls or Ross.
Another thing I thought about that she does more on the culinary side, is she totes her crepe pan everywhere! She can whip out 40-50 French crepes in no time and we eat them with Nutella, lime and sugar, or rum after setting it on fire! I don't know if any of those things spur ideas, but that is my experience!

Thanks for the links, everyone. I'm settling down for the night and can't wait to go window shopping.

I'm thinking online kitchen shopping might be a tad above my budget level but I love looking at all the stuff.

Andrea, I happened to be looking at a lovely copper crepe pan today somewhere online...it wasn't Amazon...and it was marked down from $289 to $199.

See what I mean about online kitchen shopping?

Cay! A really really great crepe pan DOES NOT have to be THAT expensive! I don't have the link right now, but I'll try to send it tomorrow. For $30 there's a made in France one that's excellent IIRC. There are great reasons to buy copper pans but making crepes (at least from what I've learned) isn't one of them.

Trust me, even if I had that kind of money I'd never spend that much on a crepe pan...copper or otherwise.

Tell me more, Andrea...especially about the lime and sugar, please .

Stef, I need a new crepe/omelette pan. Thanks for sending a link. While you're at it do you have a favorite crepe recipe and technique? I used to have a fab recipe but had to go without white wheat flour for awhile than must have lost it and haven't made many crepe's since...definitely none I love. Oh...there was a chocolate one that we stuffed with strawberries - forgot about that.

Hope I'm not hijacking the topic, Cay, but I'm drooling here!

Love,

Are you kidding? Wish I had thought to ask those questions.

For the record, crepes is one of the food items I have planned to use in my Louisiana History class, so I'd enjoy hearing all the different "toppings". Yum!

My resident pastry chef wannabe would go crazy browsing these sites! My head is spinning now looking at La Cuisine-I wouldn't know where to begin buying something for Becky. And, it is 11:30pm here now and I really need to go to bed....but look just look at all that wonderful stuff.....

Copper...the Choice of Professionals

I'm no professional but I'm definitely obsessive.

Fantes is another worthwhile site to visit. Thank you, Kristina.

I wonder if Kayleigh would be willing to make a Steamed Christmas Pudding.

They are well within my budget.

Cay--Would this be a little more her style? I've been eyeing it for a while now.

That is a great pan! You could start whole new family traditions centered around this cake pan!

Chiming in late...what about a banneton?

It's a sort of basket that you raise your bread dough in. Very French. Inexpensive. Fantes has several.

I use mine quite often!

(My dd wants to be a chef. She is already collecting basic utensils - spatulas, spoonulas, etc.)
