My husband bought a nice braided rug last week to replace the ugly wore out thing we've had in our livingroom for awhile. It is just perfect.
BUT...
The old dog pee'd on it, twice now. Yesterday I aired it out on the clothes line after blotting it down with Basic-G. Then I brought it in and sprayed it down with carpet freshner - only for her to do it again last night. (she's 14 years old and has NO bladder control, she pee's where she lays...)
Today it is raining so I can't hang it out. I blotted it down with Basic-G again, and sprayed the freshner, but I still smell that musty yucky smell. Any ideas for me? Thanks!

You might try spraying it down with one part white vinegar to one part water. I don't know what Basic G is, but there are enzyme-based cleaners from the vet, petstores, and the pet section of Wal-Mart that have worked very well for us. These are also great for vomiting accidents (we've had lots of those), and a neighbor borrowed ours and successfully got some very bad poop accident smells out of her car seats. . The price per bottle is high-ish, but you dilute it significantly, so the bottle lasts a very long time.
Hope that helps.
Peace,
Nancy

When we have a peed on rug (potty training twins :p) - we always spray it with tea tree oil + water. Just a few drops of tto in the spray bottle.

I have no suggestions for you....but maybe your dog and mine need to form a support group.
We've got the exact same problem here--only her location has been worse....way worse......our bed
The comments from dh would need to be !

I second the vinegar water spray our 16 year old dog had that issue too. It's been 2 months and I still miss him but not the smell Annie

Lisa,
I found a product at Wal-Mart that works pretty well on urine messes...actually, any mess that involves bodily fluids (poop and vomit, too).
It's called Kids & Pets. You just pour it on the soiled area and let it air-dry. I always sop up as much as I can with a rag or cloth diaper first. It's worked pretty well in our house, as long as the stains aren't really old. I'm thinking of calling a professional to deal with those b/c we're not ready to re-carpet just yet.
You can also use it in the laundry and in carpet cleaners.
Dawn

Our friends have a Yorkie that wouldn't potty train--it wears a diaper all the time. Not sure if that's an option for your dog, but it might beat washing your rug daily!
