Once this whole VA situation clears up (thanks be to God, it *may* be over with in a week, week and a half), I am going to need to buy some fabric for making winter weight skirts for the dds. The only fabric stores around here are Walmart (not great fabric), and a quilting shop (too expensive, even though I'd rather support a locally-run enterprise). Are there are any good, RELIABLE online sources for good fabrics, like corduroy, flannel, etc?
The thrift stores here are appalling. The clothes are the kinds I'd not give to a missionary to send to remote Africa...seriously . So I need to find someplace to get some fabric that I can count on to be decent, without me being there to check it out in person, with my own hands.

hmm I've had nice results with corduroy from Joann's.. do they sell fabric online?
Also fleece can make really nice cozy skirts.. and you use a simple pattern.. straight or a-line with fleece so it doesn't get too bulky... a sweatshirt fleece that has the smooth feel to one side and the soft for the inside is really nice.. it doesn't pick up "stuff" like the soft on both sides fleece.

Also think out of the box.. I made 3 jumpers out of one women's skirt when my girls were smaller. I combined it with other things (like one of those micro mini overall skirts.. I cut it shorter and made it the top of a decent length skirt.)
If the girl is still small you could get a skirt out of a man's flannel shirt.
what about blankets? you can sometimes find fleece blankets cheap. or flannel sheets?
pants/overalls can also be cut to make the top of a skirt..
You can add ruffles or other fabric extenders to the bottom of a too short skirt.
I've always thought I could take one of those mini skirts in velour and add a real full skirt to the bottom in something like tulle or organdy or such and make a skirt any little girl would love.

I have had mixed results at fabric.com The swimsuit lycra I ordered was thinner than I thought it would be--of course there's that "touch-it-for-yourself thing again. It's hard to find good fabric stores locally anymore, so I hope you have luck with that. BTW, I was at Hancock's in F'ville on Sunday and thought of you

Sniffle. Liz, I *SO* miss having three places (minimum!) to buy fabric within 10 miles of home!!!
Not that I have the $$ here, but were we still in NC, and the money the same, we'd have a BIG chunk more, just cause of the difference in house payments...
SIGH
I've ordered from Fabric.com, and loved the fabrics I've bought--but they were quilting materials, and some drapery/decorator.
Whatever I get, it has to be durable, and WARM (given the winds in OK in winter), and something that I can make easily. I'm not a terribly experienced seamstress.

Oh, and I forgot to add: I wear falnnel-backed satin slips in the winter. They make a BIG difference in warmth. I can sometimes wear a lighter weight skirt as long as I wear the warmer slip with it. Add warm knee socks, and I'm warmer than in pants.
What were the other 2 fabric places in F'villle, Rachel? I know about JoAnn's....

Rachel,
I would invest in warm tights! Last year I was unable to wear my tights and I froze (even in NC). Warm tights make a difference with any skirt, IMO.

leggins work too.. I like my silk long underwear pants.. I wear kneeboots so they're not seen at all.. and the skirts don't stick to them. I'm much warmer in my flannel lined denim skirt, long underwear and boots than I ever was in pants.. even (or especially) in windy conditions.
