Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been doing more and more sewing these days. But I am a little embarassed to admit that I have no idea what it means to topstitch. It is coming up now because I want to make Therese an I Spy bag. I plan on following parts of these two tutorials
I Spy Tutorial #1
I Spy Tutorial #2

Both of them call for topstitching. What does this mean?? Thanks so much!!

Topstitching is when you sew along the hem on the right side of the material. In other words the stitching you see on the outside of the finished product. Does that make sense? It is talked about here
Hope that helps.

A couple of things that REALLY help me make topstitching nice and neat:
  1. set machine to a big stitch; 6-8 sts to the inch seems to be the best
  2. place a piece of tape (colored if you have "old" eyes like me ) to the exact place on the base from the needle (so if you want to topstitch 1/4", measure from the exactly where the needle goes into the base and place tape at 1/4")
  3. iron the item so you've got a nice crisp edge
  4. sew slowly and evenly (when using a big stitch, you don't want to sew too fast as it makes the tension mess up a bit!)

Hope that helps and please post pictures when you're done!
