I'm trying to find a source for raw milk, and also trying to decide if we can afford it or not to begin with...how expensive is it for those out there using it? And can it be frozen, does that damage it? It's illegal to sell it in our state, so you have to travel to the next state to get it,,,this would put me at 1 1/2 hour drive each way! I'm hoping to find an "unofficial" seller closer by....

Melanie, we have the same problem in my state in Australia. However, a supplier sells her raw milk as "bath milk", and that is legal.
Perhaps do a google for bath milk and see what you come up with? Or ask at an organic foods supplier or farmer's market in your area.

Our state allows raw milk to be sold for "animal" use. You might want to check into that.

If you can find a locavore group near you, they may be able to help you locate a source.
Or search on Local Harvest for local farmers -- they might be selling raw milk from their cattle but just don't advertise, or they'll point you to someone who does.
I don't buy raw milk (milk allergies in the family) but local people who do buy what's call a "herdshare" -- basically they own part of the animal so they have a share in its milk. That way it's legal. Farmers usually let you have a gallon to try before you make a commitment.
No idea about freezing it though.

Melanie,
See if you can get a cowshare or a goatshare. In many states, if you own the animal, you can consume its milk raw. Buying a share is not only a way around some regulations, but may also be more economical, and save you a trip out-of-state.
There seems to be conflicting opinion about the effects of freezing on raw milk. Generally speaking, freezing can be a form of "cooking" for some foods. I would take a middle approach and say that you may lose some of the nutritive value with freezing, but not enough to stop me doing it.
Raw, organic milk can fetch upwards of $10/gallon. Goat milk is sometimes even higher. If you have tried goat milk and don't like the goaty flavour, chances are you've had pasteurized goat's milk. Pasteurization destroys more than the nutrients in goat's milk - it also adversly affects the lovely sweet taste. Raw goat's milk is wonderful - I'm partial to Oberhasli because that's what we have.
Check out your farmer's memberships and certifications, it'll tell you a lot about his/her practices. Many farms can't allow you into the milking floor, but you should be able to visit with the farmer. Also, there is an increase in bio-security on all farms, but especially those with livestock, so be sure to wear your rainboots and be prepared for a bootwash.
More than you wanted to know, I'm sure.
Blessings,

We just moved but we were getting it from PA for $6/gallon which I think is the best price I've ever heard of. Do ask around. I didn't live in PA and there were definitely fuzzy legal issues so were pretty underground but the milk came to my neighborhood labeled as Pet Milk. You might be able to find a closer source. I've frozen it with no noticeable change in quality, taste, texture, etc. but I didn't do a before and after nutritional analysis :).

Anne, we *could* buy raw milk (bath milk) from Avon Dairynear Perth, but as no-one sells it here in Esperance I would have to find a courier and have it freighted in - but the cost would be too much as we're 800klms away. I was surprised when we moved to WA that we can't even buy unhomogenised from the major dairies, yet we could buy two brands in Alice Springs.
When we were in Brisbane last month Elizabeth drank litres of unhomogenised milk! It was a highlight of her trip!

Thanks, everyone. It's on hold for right now I guess anyway. I talked to my dh about it, and he's totally against it, says it's "dangerous", blah blah blah...
I'll work on him...he was against homebirth once too,

Ooh! I had done some searching when I first read about raw milk, but hadn't found any sources in my online searches!
Cunderdin shows up on the map as being one location where it's available—although I guess it may not have been available when I was there...
But I can find it locally! Bit of a drive, but not horrendously so! Fabulous:-)

I used to think it was dangerous too, but we've been drinking it now for almost 4 years. I have to freeze mine. It doesn't alter the taste but it does seperate the components more, so you have to shake before you drink it. Our raw milk lasts longer once opened than pasterized milk.

We weren't too sure until we got a sample gallon given to us. We've been drinking it ever since. We get ours from a local organic farmer that we met at the farmer's market and it's cheaper than buying a gallon of pasteurized organic milk at the supermarket.

We have drunk raw milk happily for several years. Can't always afford it, but we like it. In Washington state it is legal to sell raw milk by certified dairies in regular grocery stores for human consumption. They do have warning labels. But basically it comes down to finding a dairy you are comfortable with and trusting that they keep their equipment and their cows clean. Several raw milk dairies in our area post their weekly (daily?) test results on their websites. The raw milk community is growing and built on a pretty good network. If someone is making people sick (from feces on udders or whatnot) word gets around fast.
The price here ranges from $8.25 to $12.99 (!) a gallon. Mostly it depends on transportation costs.

Boy, I was just looking, and to get a gallon of raw milk each week through cow share here is $20 a month, which isn't even 5 bucks a gallon! 80 some odd dollar initial fee, though. Still, I'll definitely have to do that whenever we have the money.

Katie, There's a great organic co-op running on the north side of indy that I'm a member of that sells raw milk for $4 per gallon (there is a $100 initial "cow purchase" but no monthly fee and you can get variable amounts of milk each week rather than the standard 1 share = 1 gallon of milk.) I also know of a couple of other sources. If you're interested, PM me.

Wow! After reading this thread, I'm REALLY appreciative of our friends who sell us our milk for $2.75/gallon. We go through about 4 gallons/week!
