Some time ago lots of people were talking about Tote bags for storing their kids school materials. Now that summer's here, would you still recommend that system? We'll be moving from our spacious classroom up to our dining room for school next year. I'm trying to think of a way to store the kid's books since adding a bookshelf in that room is not an option. I'm wondering if the bags worked as well as they sounded?

I'd like to know too. I am using a Land's End tote to store all my planning stuff this summer and I had just had the thought that it might work for my kids stuff too, and make it portable when needed.

I'm doing the same thing which is what led to my question. It's so nice to just grab my bag when I'm headed to my dd's piano lessons, the dentist, or wherever I might have some waiting time. I can work on my planning or my reading (which is in there too). When I read the threads about using tote bags (this past winter, I think) I didn't really need them so I didn't pay much attention. For this coming school year, I'll have to either use bags or crates, or bins or whatever. I was thinking bags would be easier but I am hoping someone who uses them (or used them) will chime in with their experience.

I can't say it really worked for us, we haven't had the best year, I bought the kids backpacks instead of totes. My intention was the backpacks would be where they would store all their work books. I need to put up some hooks for hanging them on, that might help.

We used totes. Like Mary Chris, we need pegs or something to hang them. It didn't turn out quite as I had hoped.

I used the medium sized LL Bean totes with their named monogrammed on it for each of my kids. It has worked very well for us. I put them beside my book cases. The children grab what they need and then put them back. It makes it easy for them to return everything to one place. I guess you could also use tubs on bookshelves.

Mary Chris and Jen,
I have a nice empty spot that I was thinking the bags would go into when we are done with schoolwork. Did these not work for you because of the storage space issue?
I don't mean to be nosy - I'm just trying to figure this out and I don't want to spend alot of money on something that isn't going to work. (I just bought a bunch of books and my pockets are almost empty!)

I followed the directions at this blog and made several bags last year to use around the house and as gifts. It's a great size for books, knitting, groceries, etc. I love them and I used clearance fabric, which meant I made 2 bags for as low as $4.

We just used old tote bags my mom had from when she ran my dad's business(old samples--he was in advertising specialties). So the bags were not uniform--various sizes. We are a larger family living in a smaller space, and the bags ended up on the floor beside bookshelves but it was one more thing to have to make a path around. I think if dh would install pegs or hooks on the wall, maybe in our entry room or someplace inconspicuous, it would work better. I really liked having their books in one place.
