This summer I have started to sew more. I have enjoyed sewing pillow case dresses for my dds. I have made a bunch of them. I have made a couple of pairs of soft soled shoes for my younger dd. The other evening I made a clothes pin bag for myself.

Now I am wanting to make more clothes for my girls. I am thinking of the fall and winter as we are good for summertime. I was thinking of starting with nightgowns and pj pants for them (I figure if they don't turn out well only dh and I will see them ). Can anyone recommend a good place to get patterns? Free would be great, if possible, although I would be willing to pay a small amt. Also, the things I have made don't follow much of a pattern and also have been accompanied with tutorials. How hard is it to follow a pattern? I am wondering if I would even be able to do it. Thanks for any direction!

How fun! I love to sew but don't have much time. Maybe check Goodwill nad garage sales for patterns...I don't think they would be hard to follow if you can make shoes! I usually get patterns at the fabric store when they do the Simplicity or Butterick or whichever for 1$ each. I get a bunch of easy or quick ones, basic jumpers, jammies, stuff like that, or the ones with loads of options. The size range is usually pretty good so if I don't get to it right away, I can use it later.   ANd then I almost always find something beautiful that I want to make, but don't get the nerve to even try

Oh yes, watch for the sales.. you can get most of the big names on sale for $1 each (often with a limit of 5 or so).

I think you'd be able to follow a pattern quite easily.. I sometimes have to play with the pattern and the directions to be able to picture just what is it they're talking about.. but I learned from my mom who never followed their directions.. just put the pieces together in the way that made sense to her.

Have you looked online for free patterns? I saw a software program once that was for making patterns, but it seemed like a lot of trouble.

Joann fabrics frequently has patterns on sale for 99 cents - or even 1.99.

A good girls pattern for tops is Simplicity 4206. I've even lengthened it into a nightgown for my daughter.

Do a google search for "twirly skirt" and you should wind up at the houseonhill blog. She has a great tutorial for a kids skirt. I'd lengthen it a bit, though. It was a bit short for my toothpick daughter.

I find the simplicity patterns easier than mccalls which are easier than butterick (IMO and this could be completely in my head).

Thanks for the tips. I like that shirt, I was thinking of making something like that. Would it be easy to lengthen the arms? And I love the twirly skirt. My dd3 loves to wear skirts and dresses (they are more fun to dance in ) So she would be pleased as punch to have skirts to wear. Also, I love tutorials. I feel more comfortable with them than I do with a pattern.
