Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. I have been reading Barefoot Contessa - and thought I would ask everyone what your 10 favorite kitchen tools are (and hopefully get some ideas as I am lacking many). Mine are

- Vitamix
- electric tea kettle
- slow cooker
- stainless steel pans
- steamer
- George Foreman Grill
- grilled sandwich/pannini maker
- dd, dsx3, who are my "Kitchen Aids"

LOL, Macbeth.

My 10:

1. chef's knife
2. paring knife

I can do most anything with those 2 up there, even open cans, like the past 2 days that my can opener has disappeared

3. set of cutting boards
4. vintage Cuisinart/Robot Coupe
5. Electrolux DLX mixer and blender attachment
6. real Chinese wok
7. the Catamount fat separator that I broke months ago and haven't replaced
8. rice cooker
9. my iPod baker (scroll down to 2nd pic)
10. and last but not least, my human dishwasher (dh)

***good knives and sharpener - I get chicago cutlery walnut tradition.. they fit my hand and I love the feel of the wood.. and I don't have a dishwasher so don't have a problem with them accidently going in that.

***stand kitchen aid mixer with various attachments

***cast iron skillets and good metal spatulas to use with them

***rice cooker.. don't ask me how but I was a failure with minute rice since getting the rice cooker we can be sure of getting edible rice when I make it

***flat wisk I have two of different sizes.. and I love how easy they are to clean.. and they can be used in skillets.. I even use them for lifting/draining things the rare times I deep fry

***electric roaster I wasn't sure about it.. but I do use it a lot.. it makes a great pot for cooking beans.. and in the summer I can haul it out on the patio and not heat up the house and still cook casseroles and roasts and pots of beans and such.

*** hanging baskets - great catchalls for moving stuff up out of toddler reach.. and I have one next to my sink for the sippy type of cups.. cups in the biggest basket and lids the next up.

*** silicone rubber spatulas.. those are great.. not only can I use them for the baking but I can use them in cooking too

*** digital meat thermometer - so easy to use and takes away the guessing

***wooden spoons and spatulas - I do love the feel of wood.. and they're so handy.. I keep them in an open canister so they're easy to grab.

Stef - please give me some knife advice - I have the worst knives in the world - whenever my mom or mom in law come to stay they really complain about my knives. I tried a couple from Bed Bath - but they were trash. Any advice as to what brand and size - I would like to get one or two that cut most things

Marilyn,
You think of the grooviest threads. I needed something fun like this.

1) My pantry---honestly, it took me years to get a pantry even close to the one Laura Ingalls Wilder had...I LOVE my pantry.

2) My 3 Pampered Chef paring knives---no one touches them except me.

JodieLyn wrote:

This is hilarious, Jodie. And I really needed a good laugh.

So I'll list...

3) Rice cooker---which I love even though I learned (and can still make) a pot of rice on the stovetop.

4-10...I'm thinking. I'm thinking.

Mine are Wusthofs, my brother's are Henckels. I love them. Got my set at eBay for 1/2 the price they were selling in stores. I think $120 at the time, including a knife block.
It really pays to invest in good, quality knives. And to learn how to sharpen them properly. I do have a Chef's Choice electric knife sharpener but since learning how to do it my grandpa's way (knife sharpening block) I've been using the electric less.

That said, my grandpa was unbelievable at sharpening knives. He had $3 and $4 knives that were dangerously sharp. I still don't know how he did it. I miss him If he were still here I wouldn't spend the money on more expensive knives.

My iPod baker is my 17-yo. She's going for a 4-year culinary degree after high school and is getting lots of practice now. And she usually bakes with the iPod. So I call her that.

Forgot to mention

A couple of chef friends love their Santokus and other Japanese knives. I've tried one and they're really nice, especially for cutting sashimi. I don't have a good reason to add one to my collection though, my knives do everything I need them to do for now.

Oh, and if you do any bone-chopping (like for soups) you'll want a good, sharp, heavy Chinese cleaver.

a comprehensive knife skills tutorial from egullet.org that teaches you about knife parts and sharpness, etc.

and another from the Food Network

Y'all are going to laugh at me, but my list is mostly my Pampered Chef items!

1) My non-stick cookware (PC) because the see-through lids and such easy clean-up. It makes it easy for me to wait on the dishes if I need to, because I know that it will still be easy to clean.

2) My Santoku knife (PC) because even though I am little, I feel like I have the power to slice/dice/chop ANYTHING with this knife in my hand. (Cay, I agree with you about those paring knives. Those little things are great!)

3) The PC stoneware (ANY pieces). I use them for everything, including in my microwave, and I love the easy clean-up.

4) The silicone spatulas/spoonulas - same reason as Jodie (PC) - I can use them to mix and they are safe on my non-stick cookware.

5) Easy clean Kitchen brush with a long handle to keep my hands out of the water, for my stones and cookware washing. I can throw it in the dishwasher when I am all done, and it comes so clean. (PC - should I stop mentioning that?? )

6) Food chopper - especially when I am in a hurry, or have to relieve some stress

7) Stand up KitchenAid mixer - NOT PC

8) Stainless steel mixing bowls with lids (PC). They have a nice rubber bottom to keep me from chasing them all over the counter, and they have soo many sizes.

9) All my measuring tools from PC - easy read measuring cups that I don't have to look at from the side; and adjustable measuring spoons and cups (one for cups and one for tsp/tbsp); and measure all cup.

10) Jar opener (PC). My DH is not usually home when I need help opening something, so this is perfect for my mason jars, jelly jars that are stuck, or even a little nail polish bottle. I gave this to my mom one christmas and she uses it for her medicine bottle as well.

I know I have a lot more that I reach for every day. I think those are the highlights!

Cay - I find it rather amusing myself.. because I am otherwise considered a pretty good cook.. I cook mainly from scratch, I can bake and I've taught myself somewhat how to cook both german and chinese foods and I'm rather good at mexican (though I've had more instruction in that).. and I fail at minute rice?!?!?!

I love the sound of Fuzzy's stoneware and jar opener(I have been known to run to a neighbor's to open my jars when dh is not home!!)

As for the Kitchen Aid - I have been wanting one for years - just not made the budget for it. I have to convince myself that I will really use it.

I think she was talking about this I have had 3 and keep giving them away. Mostly to Great Grandma's with arthritis.

My 10 would also be PC heavy:
1 - my (ahem, 10+) baking stones
2 - bamboo spoons, spatuals
3 - Quick Stir pitcher
4 - mini-muffin pan
5 - measure all
6 - cooling racks
7 - easy opener
8 - my gas stove! I did not like having an electric one for awhile.
9 - my pressure cooker
10 - Mama B's (the pizza place across the street from my house!)

Hmmmm... this is a great exercise for me as I try to see what we use and what we don't need.

1. Crock pot
2. Paring knives (one PC, one not) - dh is knife phobic so I use these for everything!
3. Big multi-quart pot (I forget how big - but bigger than average)
4. Whisks
5. Cast iron skillet/griller for the stove top
6. Stainless steel bowls
7. My moms old Osterizer blender. This thing is probably as old as me and still going strong. I've been using it w/o an O-ring forever too (until recently, didn't know it needed one!) and haven't had any problems. They don't make 'em like this anymore unless it's $$$$
8. Muffin tin
9. 4 cup measuring cup (not for it's accuracy though! It's just convenient )

Ummmm...plates?

Honestly, we *have* other things, but I tend to want simplicity in the kitchen. I also can't list favorites that I'm only using because of allergies (like our own ice cream maker) because I don't WANT to be using them, I WANT to be just going to the store and buying like normal people, YKWIM? Someday I'll get over that.

Actually, I am talking about this jar opener. I don't have as much luck with the other opener, as I can't use it on my big mason jars that hold my spaghetti sauce.

Angi, I use my cooling racks for my laptop to keep it cool! I also love your #10 - we have one like that.

Marilyn, my DH gave me a kitchenaid mixer one christmas and he purchased it from Costco, at a cheaper price.

In no particular order because I don't have that much mental energy . . .

1. Stand Mixer
2. Cast iron skillet
3. Cast iron griddle
4. Chef's knife
5. wok
6. that square metal tool you use to cut dough--what is that thing called?
7. heat proof rubber silicone spatula

I guess that's it. I really want a crock pot but our kitchen was too tiny this year. Maybe soon.
