Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For the first time...

The oldest two dds and I went to a local u-pick berry patch, and got 7lbs of blackberries in 20 min of fast picking (rains were coming)...Came home, cleaned up the berries, and made 11 pints of jam in an or so of work. Very easy, and its all sealed and set up in the pantry now. Hopefully, we will be able to get some more, soon. I'd love to put some more up, as we go thru quite a bit of jam/jelly around here.

I used the recipe out of my Fannie Farmer cookbook--very simple and relatively speaking, quick.

I'm hoping to get some blueberries from the same place in a few more weeks, and then some peaches (peach festival here come mid-July), and then some pears. I missed the mulberry season, cause I didn't have a good recipe...but I found one. So next year...

Do any of you have some good canning recipes? I've got some pickle recipes, but I'm looking forward to trying some other things out...

Rachel

Congratulations on your first jam making, Rachel.

I'm sorry I don't have any recipes to share, yet.
My mom always canned for our family and will come to help me throughout the summer.

This weekend, I hope to come home with a load of strawberries from a u pick farm. The farms here haven't even opened because the wet spring has delayed ripening by a month.

We'll also have to do something with the tons of plums and grapes growing on our lot, but that won't happen until the fall. If my garden continues as it is, we will try our hand at canning vegetables (tomato sauce, relish, roasted bell peppers, pickles....)

I made 4 pints of strawberry jam yesterday! Haven't really canned much in the past 4 years, so it felt good to get back into the swing of it. We happened to visit some friends with a farm the day before and we got to pick in their patch!!

No strawberries around here. But I do live in the Peach Capital of Oklahoma, so we should be enjoying some peach butter, peach preserves, sliced peaches, halved peaches...well, you get the idea.

Emailed back with the lady who owns the place we got the berries from, and we *may* be able to go back next week and get some more, assuming the weather is good, and the other folks in the line DO go on vacation as they are supposed to...

Yes. I hope they go and have a wonderful time, and LEAVE ME ALL THE BERRIES....bwahahahahahahahaha!!!!! (evil laugh).

Rachel (who has more than 30dozen canning jars I can fill up)

Sooo...how hard is it to make jam? I have an abundance of mulberries, but I am hesitant to make a huge amount of jam.

Oh, and all I have is a camp stove to cook the stuff. Is sterilizing the jars a big chore?

Ok, tell me how you acquired so many??????

I'm still looking for someone who wants to get rid of their jars.    I don't want to spend $$$ buying new jars if I don't have to, especially when I KNOW someone has canning jars collecting dust in their garage.

Flea market, more than 8 yrs ago. It was a man selling his mother's stash.

try the thrift stores, if you don't mind getting them one or two at a time. Occasionally find them at yard sales--more likely to find a bunch of them that way. Just make sure that they are "ding" free around the rims....

For lids and rings, try Family Dollar and other similar stores. I bought packs of 12 lids/$1 just a couple of weeks ago (I have about 60 dozen lids stored, but they aren't unpacked yet, sigh).
