Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know we're in the 3rd week of Easter, but I need to talk this out before I forget.

Part of our tradition of decorating Easter Eggs is to use crayons to draw designs, Easter symbols, etc. and then dye them. The contrast, especially with white crayon and the dye is a lot of fun.

This year we had a particularly difficult time making the crayons write on the egg. I've had this problem in the years past, but we've never found a solution.

I use tap water, stainless steel pots, nothing added to the water. I know people who decorate pysanky do extra cleaning to the shell, but since the hardboiled eggs are to be eaten, I of course can't use chemicals.

Anyone else have this problem? A solution?

are the eggs warm when you color on them? I would think that would help.. they're also supposed to take the dye better than cold eggs.. but I don't think I've ever really been able to get a good "line" with crayons on easter eggs.

This year I got one of the kits with the concentrate dye and paint brushes.. now that was fun.. we dyed eggs and then put the littler ones into the bath and the older kids and I decorated them (especially taking eggs that had like one splotch of color and making something out of it) some of them we did finger smudges to cover unintentional finger smudges.. or we'd draw things on them.. and we finished up and put them away while the little ones were in the bath so that we could work in peace

What sort of crayon are you using? That could make a difference to your previous years. We used wax crayon but I'm assuming you did to.

wipe the eggs with white vinegar. It will not harm you and it will remove wax and chemicals from the shell.   Just a light wipe down.

We use vinegar to clean the eggs too.

See? I'm so glad I started this thread. Sometimes it's just obvious! I use Crayola crayons, and of course the beeswax would do better! I admit I haven't bought any (indecision and price balking at its finest) but now I have the perfect excuse. Anything to make our egg decorating better!

Ah, good suggestion. We have added vinegar to the water in the past, but that made it worse. I'll try this, too.

Thanks, everyone! Any other help will be greatly welcomed!

We didn't use beeswax just ordinary wax crayons. Mind you the beeswax may well have been more effective.
