Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Mary and all,

I need help. I've got twisted stitches in my knitting, always have, and never really tried to correct it, because it produces a pretty effect anyway since I do it consistently . But now I really would like to learn how to do it correctly. Any tips? What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

Stef -- twisted stitches ARE a design element -- the Austrian Tyrolean traditional knitwear are done this way -- on a backgrund of purl, the twisted knit stitches really rise up above the fabric .... LOVELY!

To avoid twisting your stitches (which I too did for years) is the direction you're inserting your needle and the way your sts are resting on the needle. When I purled, all was fine, so just trying "fixing" the knit side ...

Look at your knitting -- if the more forward half of the st is the right-hand side of the loop, then put the needle in and wrap counter-clockwise to make the next st. If the more forward loop is the left-hand side, put the needle in and wrap clockwise to make the st.

Basically, you're trying to do WHATEVER YOU need to do to make the st lay flat with a smooth "v" join at the bottom. Play with it a bit and you'll quickly figure out what you're doing.

BTW, you're not doing it wrong -- just different. There are over 30 ways to cast on so there are probably at least that many ways of knitting generally! Don't sweat it -- remember it's the final product you're concerned with -- knit the way that makes you feel comfortable.

OK, off my soap box !

I TOTALLY agree with the not wrong just different comment from Mary.

I knit holding the needles and yarn in a totally wierd way, the cackhanded way I learned as a child and carried on with, and it makes "proper" knitters smile to watch me, but I have knitted for years and am happy with what comes off the needles in the end.

Happy knitting!

I was at a knitting convention back in 1985 (and didn't THAT get comments since I was only 23 and hanging out with a bunch of ol' ladies! ) and a "big name" knitting designer watched me knit and said "I don't know how you're doing what you're doing, but it works so just keep on" ! I think many folks hate knitting because they're taught there is only one way and no matter how uncomfortable they're still supposed to do it -- I HATE that attitude. Knitting is SUPPOSED to be relaxing, darn it!

Thank you for your help!! I'll try that but I certainly won't be losing sleep over it if my stitches don't untwist!
