Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can you crafty women put on your thinking caps? I'm thinking there could be some ideas on using the leftover purple and pink Advent wreath candles. You know all those candle stubs you have building up in a drawer? Or maybe that's only me. Perhaps an idea for something to use this Lent?

I'd love something simple and cheap (i.e., few if none supplies to buy) and perhaps something to make with my young son.

I was wondering about this also.

Can you melt the candles into different shapes? I'm flashing back to some candles Dawn had in a shell, and I don't think she bought them.

Here's two favorite leftover candle activities.

1. Open a paper milk carton (we use the half-pints used in cafeteria settings). Insert a wick into the center, and fill with ice cubes. Melt the old stubs (using a double boiler, of course), and pour over the ice in the carton. As the wax hardens, it develops a lovely lace effect where the ice cubes were. Make sure that you burn it on a wax-proof surface.

2. Sand-cast candles. Prepare a tray of sand (we use cleaned sandbox sand) about four- to six- inches deep. (Or, just make them in the ground). Hollow out a bowl- shaped depression in the sand, and place a wick in the center. Melt the old stubs (using a double boiler, of course), and pour into the depression. Allow the wax to cool, then dig out the shape, and shake off the excess sand from the outside. Make sure you burn it on a wax-proof surface.

One can also purchase candle molds at craft stores, and just melt your stubs (say it with me---using a double boiler, of course) and re-cast your wax.

we have made candles like Mary at home it is fun!

also shell candles. all done the same way, but pouring the wax into a sea shell (one that sits pretty level helps lol)

If you use a candle mold (like a pillar one) you can add pebbles or small shells to the bottom, or anything really leaves, twigs etc...

after it sets up the objects will show in the was at the bottom of the candle.... like the ones that are $12 dollars + in the stores lol.
