Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone tried deep frying the Thanksgiving turkey? This is my first time to host Thanksgiving at my home, and we're thinking about trying this. I've heard it's delicious AND it would free up the oven for side dishes.

I'd love any tips, suggestions, stories , or anything!

I've not tried deep frying, although I admit that I am curious! We usually smoke our turkey, which is very good and also frees up the oven.

Oh, there is lots of information on Alton Brown's website about how to safely do it, plus, his recipe to do so from Food Network.

I actually recommend brining, as he suggest, whether you fry or not...(I blogged about our first brined turkey that we did last year (and was a small fiasco), but really, the taste was excellent.

I've heard that fried turkey is very good, but the one time I had it for Thanksgiving it was very dry and tough. I suspect they just overcooked it, but can't say for sure since I've only had it once.

One piece of advice:
Don't wear flip-flops and try to remove the bird from the hot oil unless you want to be the comedy act for the evening.

My husband has fried our turkey for several years now. We love it. He doesn't do anything fancy (he does NOT wear flip flops as Jennifer recommends. He DOES wear large oven mitts) - I buy the Tony Cac (haven't the foggiest idea how to spell it)...I find it in the "ethnic" (chines, cajun, mexican) food aisle of the grocery store. we buy the green bottle - i think its just "butter" flavor.

delish.
