I am wanting to order some felt. I am looking at the assortments from Paper, Scissors, Stone and also at the felt at A Child's Dream Come True. Paper, Scissors, Stone is cheaper, but not 100% wool. Some of the felt at A Child's Dream looks gorgeous, especially the "plant dyed", but the pieces are quite small, it's very expensive, and probably what I really need is a budget assortment to get me started. Has anyone used both to compare? Is the "Stone" assortment "good enough"? I DO care about quality and the "feel" of a thing, and I do not like the garish colors of craft store felt (nor the way it pills on the surface even with gentle play)! BUT--my budget is very tight!
I want to use the felt for making some little dolls, a christmas advent wallhanging, and just to have on hand for crafts. Thanks for any input!

I've ordered from The Silver Penny. It's not 100% but I think it's good quality and the price per piece is pretty good. However, in the future I may oder from here. On their most popular colors the price is really good, especially if you order 10 or more and get the additional discount. They have a lot of other colors that the price wouldn't be awful if you bought 10 or more. This way you can pick and choose colors and control the amount instead of buying a large package.
Hope this helps. I know I have a problem spending so much on something when it's likely to be destroyed by a 2 yo !

thank you for the reference--the silver penny assortment looks nice--much larger pieces than the other sampler packs.
yes, my 2 year old and scissors-tape-and-stapler happy 8 year old will not be having access to this felt, I think!

I got some recently from Colonial Crafts. It's 70% wool in color packs. The pieces are 12"x18". They also have 100% wool and I think they have yardage as well. The prices, I thought, were excellent!

Just another idea for just getting started-JoAnn's sells wool felt by the yard and you can use the 40% off coupon. Their wool felt is different blends but I've still found some of it too be very durable and nice quality for toy making.
This is not the garish bright squares-this is on bolts and more earthy colors in general.
If you have a quliting shop around you may find some there as well to get an idea of feel and quality.
good luck

I've been very happy with quality, price, and service. They had a bricks and mortar shop right up the road from me, so I had a chance to touch and see everything that they carry!
What I love best is that they carry lots of craft supplies for more obscure crafts. I can get felting, needlepunch, and rug making supplies all from one shop.
Blessings,

This is the standard felt I use for crafting as well. It's usually 70% wool at Jo-Ann's, which is very durable and of good quality, Ann, just like you said.
I purchased entire bolts of this when JoAnn's was closing all their little stores and opening those behemoth ones (only to end up closing our local one after all that).
TANGENT ALERT....I have several yards of the navy blue, if anyone is interested in it. We are moving overseas and, sadly, the fabric collection will have to become considerably smaller in the next few weeks.
The good news is that Ive been using up a lot of my fabric for actual projects lately under the stress of thinking about having to let it go! I made a really fun duvet cover...hopefully I will have a picture of it on my blog in the next few days. (end TANGENT)
I wouldnt be afraid to use something a little less than one hundred percent wool as long as the end product doesnt REQUIRE all-wool. The high wool content blends work really nicely. Ive made Steiner/Waldorf crowns and wands, and arrowheads for home-made bow-and-arrow sets as gifts, for sale on ebay and for sale in my son's (former) school's store...and I was very happy with the quality, as were the customers who purchased them.

to continue this thread, what is the difference between all the felt out there? In other words, how do you decide where/what to buy? I am going to start making peg dolls with/for my kids 4 & 14 months

I think that you should buy the nicest that your budget will allow. There is a big difference in the standard polyester/acrylic craft felt and wool felt. The wool felt feels nice in the hand. I like the way the wool drapes and wears better than the synthetic.

I agree with Nissa...
and just an FYI about trying to get wool felt at Joann's or Hancock's -- I went a few weeks ago... and they were out of MANY colors. But were completely stocked in acrylics.
