Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've just posted a tutorial on my weblog for making silhouette portraits.

If you try it, I'd love to see your projects, too!

Blessings,

Nissa, that's lovely...but I'm not clear on one thing. Are you cutting the profile photo itself to get the template?

I have one of my oldest from when he was 2...a silhouette artist came to the mall. I've always wanted ones of the other children. I think I'm feeling a bit inspired...

That's a great question Noreen. You want to print the digital photo out on cardstock or matte photo paper. And that's what you cut to get the template. What you are seeing is the backside of that paper.

The reason I did these now was that I had silhouettes of my oldest three and not of my youngest three. And I have never had one of either myself or my husband. I'd love to do some of our family and friends to hand up as a huge grouping. I'd also like to do some still-life ones.

Excellent question. Would you mind putting it in the comments section for me to answer? I'm guessing that others may wonder the same thing.

Oh and wouldn't they make fun avatars for here and elsewhere online!

Yes, that would be fun! What a good idea!

I'm thinking of making stationery, too. Custom silhouette stationery can be pretty costly, but it is so beautiful.

You can also draw around a REAL silhouette to get a bigger portrait...
I like the little cameos you did better though. I'm thinking Christmas present.

I just posted, Nisaa. I never knew I could post comments at blogs w/o an account. I'm just learning a ton here!

Thanks, Noreen! I just posted my reply, too.

I set my blog so that no one needs an account to post. I think most blogs have that option somewhere in the admin panel.

This particular craft seems to have struck a chord because the hit rate is almost my record high for a single day. I'm pleased as punch that the tons of useless information floating around in my head is actually interesting to someone!

I've tried drawing around an actual shadow for a life-scale silhouette. I must be totally inept because mine came out all wonky. Of course, children might not be the best subject for that method since they're prone to wiggle. I'd love to try it again sometime, though.

Now I'm thinking that it would be fun to do silhouettes of the pets, too. So sad.

Nissa,
I love this!!!

I've been courted by the idea of silhouettes since we went to DisneyWorld this past February. I had silhouettes of my three girls made. I practically ran around DW that last day trying to set-up a sitting for all three because they were booked and the girls were there to have fun...not sit for pictures.

Of course it didn't take the lady but 10 minutes but I was determined not to leave without my silhouettes.

I've been wanting to do a blog post of silhouettes. I think they're so Victorian.

I told dh I'd love to do some on the sideline but didn't have the training the girl at DW had...she freehanded the silhouettes. Your tutorial is perfect.

Thank you for sharing.

Oh those artists that can cut from life just fascinate me. What a gift!

And I'm in love with all things Victorian. Lace, embroidery, pretty dresses, even the colors. Burgundy and pale yellow - delish. Pretty ornate decoration, handwriting with grand flourishes...

<sigh>

Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong century. But then I remember flush toilets.

You and me both... DS is learning a Victorian handwriting you know... and I really want to make DD wear one of those little children's pinafores...
