Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

If you had like....1 week to knit something (small) for a Godparent's new baby (whom you reallllly like), what would you knit? I'm thinking booties or hat....do you have a favorite pattern?

Kathleen

Here's what I'd do ...

Get nice yarn -- worsted weight or heavier -- nothing too fluffy or with bits coming off (babies tend to swallow things like that ). Get large dpn & circ -- size 11 to 15, or something like that.

CO 4 sts. K first round.
K2 sts in each st. K around on 8 sts.
(k1, k2 in next st) around. K around on 12 sts placing markers between 3rd and 4th st around (these will be the corners).
Row 6: (k3, yo at marker) 4 times.
Row 7: (k3, yo, k1, yo) 4 times.
Row 8: knit around
Row 9: (k to yo, k1, yo) 4 times

Rep rows 8 & 9 till blanket is about 30" square. Garter st or other edging for 3-6 rows, BO and voila ....

This goes real fast and you'll find that it can be quite elegant in a sophisticated cream yarn or quite "fun" in a multi-colored yarn.

You're most welcome, Kathleen! The nice thing about this is that you can make it as fancy/expensive as you want by the yarn you choose ... if you're in the south (or it's going south ), a cotton blend would be nice; if it's going north, a wool-blend or all wool would be nice ....Yarns have come such a long way from the old days of scratchy wool or stiff acrylics !

Post a picture if you can ....

BTW, my youngest daughter's middle name is Brigid - the Irish way! Her godmother from Ireland goes by the nickname "Breda" ... as in "In this House of Brede"!

Hey Mary,

Probably cotton...we live right near your old home....Central S.C.

We call baby Brigid Mary, Bridie. It's pronounced like bride, only with an -ee at the end. I have a host of Aunties and cousins in Ireland with the nickname Breeda and we wanted something else. Incidentally, my relatives in Ireland were all aghast when they heard I was going to call her "Bridie" because it is so old-fashioned and Granny-ish. No one knows here and I think it is sweet!

Fondly,
Kathleen

Kathleen,

CENTRAL! That's where you live? We were there this summer for a neice's wedding .... my dh's parents and sister/BIL live there; BIL teaches at Clemson and my SIL is a special needs aid.

We actually lived in Central before moving to the big city (Greenville!).... so where are y'all ....

Hey Mary,

We are actually in the central part of the state...shouldn't have capitalized. Now, how can I expect my children to get these things right? We live in Columbia.

I have a question for you....in this lovely blanket pattern....how do I knit 2 in the same stitch?

Fondly,
Kathleen

Kathleen I didn't know you were in Columbia! Our dear Nigerian priest friend just moved down there in July. He's attending USC as a grad student and would LOVE to meet some Catholic families down there. Oh my gosh we miss him so much - ya'll would just LOVE him he's SO much fun. Can you e-mail me privately? I would PM you but I am terrible about answering PM's. E-mail me instead.

Oh, Columbia ... that's still pretty near the upstate although not as close .... .

To knit 2 in the same stitch -- knit like normal but don't pull the left needle out of the stitch and then knit again into the same stitch from the back. You can also do the increase by knitting into the stitch below the next st and then knitting the st regularly. Or you can make a yo for the increase, but this will give you little eyelet holes -- which can be a design feature if you'd like -- little holes running along a diagonal line up the corners.
