or is anyone out there already getting ideas for christmas crafts? i know, i know, i am sweating up a storm right now. maybe thinking about christmas cools me down somehow. anyone else already thinking of christmas?

Not crazy at all. I was just enjoying Theresa's Christmas Notebook pages and dreaming...  
And I have hopes of sending the last of the Christmas Mosaic offerings to Hillside Education today.

Nope, you're not the only crazy one. We start in June since we make nearly all of our gifts by hand.
Sure does keep the house quieter for 6 months of the year. Secrets abound. All I get are shopping lists of beads, yarn, fabric and wood. Ocassionally, I'm asked for advice.
Come Christmas we're laden with dollies, bears, and wooden trains. Wonderful!

I have already started, too. I make thread crochet snowflakes in sets for Christmas presents, so I start January 2, with a goal of six to eight sets of 50 or more by Thanksgiving. That's when I starch and block them, so they are ready to go out the door for people who decorate before Christmas day.
The nice thing about the snowflakes is that they are small and portable, so I'm not desperately hot under an afghan or something! They look cool, not warming!

That is what prompted by embroidered flour towel post! Dd wants to start needlework and I'd love to steer it in the direction of Xmas gifts!

Oh, yes.....
soon you will have plastic storage totes of supplies, which threaten to take over your home. Balls of crochet thread. Complete sets of hooks. Hundreds of skeins of embroidery floss. Six different kinds of scissors for every job imaginable.
But if you'd like another fun, useful, and age appropriate needlework craft for your daughter (and yourself), I recommend the Knifty Knitter. It is a circular knitting loom which is super easy for kids to use, and which produces useful products.

the straw weaving tool is also an easy needlecraft for kids, but you can make one at home out of drinking straws in any size you want.
So now you know how I can make predictions like I did above....it happened to me!

No--Between the converations about toys and beauty, I've decided to go all handmade this Christmas with one waldorf toy and one beautiful book for each child. I know it needs planning, so I am starting now! And obsessing about it...my dh will not talk to me about it any more, so I went to Alice's house tonight to borrow embroidery pattern books and toy making books. So, I already have my craft list planned!

I have a book list about a mile long to buy - all felty stuff. Waldorf dolls I'm in love with and the two babes will each get one, God willing.
And I have mohair and wool stuffing ready to go for bears. The knittiing needles are clacking away already. And I've recently started tatting - what fun! Maybe a couple of lace bookmarks?

I'm making little star shaped dolls with knotted hands and feet and Waldorf-style faces for me two little guys and small acorn capped people for the tree house set we are getting the older boys...rock critters for Granny and Pop's garden, a potted herb garden in painted pots for my sil, embroidered tea towels and vintage tea cups for my mom and sisters, embroidered slippers for the boys, wooden spoon puppets for my niece, and the kids are each going to make something for the other...Quinn will make shadow puppets, Gabe is going to tie dye pajamas, and Brendan is going to make paper pin wheels. I am going to make chalkboard lap desks and use Evan fingerprints to put names on them. I am making my own craft space in dh's work shop so my stuff can stay out all the time and I can go work for an hour or so each evening. I am so happy, I can't wait for fall to get here so I don't feel so silly working on Christmas crafts!

There are kits for the acorn people at many Waldorf and natural toys websites...like this one. But Alice C. showed me some her mom made using pipe cleaners wrapped in embroidery floss and wooden bead heads. I am going to try on my own first. The tree house is from the same site. I'd like to make one set of Lord of the Rings type people like these I found on Etsy and one set like this woodland family.

Now I have to ask you, because I think of you every time I see the wool felt in the catalogs! You mentioned in the past you're allergic to wool, and did you also say some of your children are? I am allergic, and so is my son. I have problems working with wool yarn, both with my skin and respiratory reactions. So, do you find felt not as much of a problem? I keep sighing at those beautiful colors and keep reminding myself that I can't do the felting crafts.

Okay--It seems the first the thing I do every morning is make an amazon order! Elizabeth--it's too bad we can't drink tea and make little felt people together...and I can't borrow Mary Beth for a little bit of girl craftiness over here. Maybe we can move to Virginia until Christmas....

From where are you getting your felt, Collen? I'm allergic to wool but I think I might be able to do this without too much reaction. I'm not going to wear them . And the wool felt seems much better than the acrylic...
