I recently bought a tub of moon sand, thinking it sounded intriguing. But, sadly, it just seems crumbly and hard to work with- not sticky and moldable like play dough, so not easy to shape. The kids have just been frustrated trying to work with it.

Anyone have any suggestions for crafts using moon sand? I would like to use ours up and be done with it.

No ideas really. I was disappointed with Moon Sand, too. I talked with a mother in the store one day about my disappointment, and she said her boys liked it better than Play Doh.

My son enjoyed it, but I found it messier than Play Doh, so it's no longer allowed on the carpet. What worked for him was shaping sand like on the beach. Small cups, cookie cutters forcing the sand into them left molds. Of course, it topples over more easily than the dough or clay.

I'm having trouble getting the sand out of the molds, even if we try to do it like on the beach. Did you keep yours?

Sand or molds? Both...but we haven't used them much lately.

Darn, I wish someone had posted about this before I bought it.

It is *very* messy, we have sand everywhere now. The boys love playing with it but have a hard time getting it to work. They need adult help to do anything with it.

You can't really "save" the projects because there is no way to keep it from falling apart if dropped or squished. It never dries out.

The instructions say that if you are having trouble getting it out of the molds, you should wash the molds in "grease fighting" dish liquid and dry them well. You also need to gently tap them to release the molded sand.

I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to use it outside in a covered area. It says not to add water so you would have to either put it away or keep it from getting wet. If you buy the kits, they don't provide a container to store the sand in, but if you buy the little bucket ones you can keep it in the buckets.
