Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm trying to make our pool towels into backpacks. I'm using an old towel to make the straps, but they are really hard to turn. I'm halfway through the first and am completely stuck.

Is there a way to determine the width of the strap based on the weight of the fabric so you know it will turn easily? I hate to experiment and waste fabric. I'm trying to not have to buy anything for this project.

I wouldn't turn the straps, because they are so bulky.

I would stitch them right side out. You could then adjust the strap so you iron it flat with the seam in the back instead of on the side. Then I would edgestitch to keep it flatter.

Also, if you iron the seam flat and open, I would maybe run some stitches on either side of the edges so the towel won't ravel. Zigzag or some other decorative stitch but is also reinforcing. It will look nice on the flip/public side, but also good for your peace of mind.

It's harder to explain in writing, so I'm sorry if I'm confusing you.

Thanks, Jenn. I think I can see what you're describing.   Now I have to figure out the very scary noise my new fixed machine is making.....

Oh, go away noise! I hate that!

I was also thinking a neater way might be French seams or flat-felled (sp), but there's no way I can explain those!

Oooh, I like her straps method even better. Fold in the seams before sewing on the right side. Hitting head! Why didn't I think of that?
