I was wondering if any of you have any home remedies for bringing down a fever. My eight year old son has the flu. We saw the doctor a few days ago for my other son but Robby (8) came with us and was seen as well. He wasn't running a fever yet. He woke up around 12:30 a.m. with a 104.3 fever. I gave him motrin and it took almost 2 hrs. for his temp to come down to 101.4. He hasn't really been below that since then and about an hour and a half ago was up to 104.8. He was about 5 hrs. into a motrin dose, when I talked to the doctor she said to put him in a lukewarm bath and give him tylenol. She also said to alternate tylenol/motrin every 4 hours. She said if it goes up to 105 to take him to the E.R. We're a tad bit snowed in at the moment and I would imagine the road conditions will be worse tonight as far as icing is concerned. So I'm looking for any suggestions for keeping his fever down so that we can stay out of the E.R. and off the roads! Thank you!

cider vinegar on a cloth on his feet can help bring it down.

if you have any access to it.. elderberry is a specific for the flu as well as being a general anti-viral.

keep him hydrated.. fever will go up as he gets dehydrated.

And are you sure about this "tylenol/motrin every 4 hours"

When I've heard of it alternating it's spacing it out so that halfway through the dose of the first one.. you give the second and keep alternating. So would be alternating the 2 every 2 hours (since a dose lasts 4 hours) it keeps the meds from wearing off without something else already in the system.

and the tepid bath is good too.. keep it warm enough not to chill him.. but not hot either.

I can usually get ginger into my kids if I add fresh grated ginger to a pineapple smoothie.. ginger is another anti-viral.

and the all powerful chicken soup is always good.. especially if garlic is added.

Jodie,

Thank you, thank you! All I had was cider vinegar - so I did that and it came down to 102! He's sleeping now and I'm going to check his temperature in about an hour. Thanks again!

Okay -- I know this sounds silly, but my mom swears by it, and I have seen it work. Onions, sliced up, and put into socks on your feet. If you google this, it shows up on websites too.

Also -- my doctor has us do the tylenol/advil thing too, and he said every 2 hours also.

Hope you all feel better, we are just getting over a round of Strep and theh Flu here, too
