Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ok, ladies, so what can I take/do? I have some slight sinus congestion (not painful) a slightly sore throat, altho my voice is going in and out. A becoming-nastier-by-the-moment cough (it's migrating from my sinuses, I think)....it's keeping me up at night (every 1- 1 1/2 hr wake ups aren't normal for me at any time--even with a newborn, so this is getting reallllly old realllllly quickly)....

I've drunk warm tea with honey. Tried saline sprays in my nose. I even considered a lower dose of Nyquil last night, just so I could get SOME sleep (but didn't, and had another one of those nights)...

I can use some advice. I don't have a headache, or really even a fever (if I do, it's really low-grade). I'm tired (but then again, I'm almost 21 weeks along, so that is par for the course).

Thoughts? Suggestions? Sympathy?

Anything?

Rachel

Dear Rachel,

Every time I read a post signed by you I end up having a huge smile on my face (and feeling better). You have a gift, girlfriend. I think I'm just going to do a search on everything you've written and just laugh myself silly....
---------------------------
First: SYMPATHY! MEGA, mega-sympathy coming your way:          I have been feeling like total ----it's the Cross, baby. Got to embrace it for a special intention you have right now. Think of what you most are concerned about, and now offer this pain at every moment you are aware of it for this particular intention to be heard and blessed. You will bring yourself hope and encouragement to push through it, knowing it is efficacious suffering.

Dextromathorphan (sp.?) PLAIN---without anything added is the ONLY thing that takes my cough away (and I think it's safe, when needed during pregnancy). Getting relief and stopping the coughing cycle, as well as being able to get rest, is in my opinion worth any "risk" to taking the meds. Coughing itself can be such a stressor on so many other areas of the body. (As a too-much-information aside : I have to really watch it because I really bulged out my hernia, AND a bad pre-existing hemmorhoid, and feel like I bruised a rib from how hard I've been coughing!) So I totally understand your frustrations.   They prescribed me all kinds of medicines with codeine, and let me tell you: they didn't work. Not benadryl or decongestants either. Hate those.

Of course, I'm on zithromax so that kills everything, but I REALLY think besides sleeping constantly (and prayer ) what helped me was drinking hot tea CONSTANTLY (we like the Yogi and Traditional Medicinal Herbal Teas) and Hot SOUP---especially avogolemono soup (a Greek soup made with egg yolks, chicken broth, lemon juice, and rice).

Hope this helps---will pray for you. I KNOW the misery and anxiety when your kids are going crazy because you're sick in bed! And most of your kids are sick, too!

God be with you!

Chicken soup... lots of garlic.. elderberry.. and I find a lot of relief from eucalyptus essential oil.. a drop on a hanky held near your nose so you breathe the fumes.. I set the hanky on my pillow at night. Oh and proping yourself up with pillow can help too.

Oh and lemon with the honey.. the lemon oils soothe the throat.. the honey is a natural antibiotic. I can't have much honey.. upsets my stomach.. so I usually skip it and just use lemon and regular sugar.. I find a hot lemonade to be very yummy.

I opted for Tylenol Cold. Not natural, but the best I could do in my brief run to the CVS around the corner yesterday morning. I checked it out, and I can take it (just not for days and days on end)....I'm stratching the time between doses and all that, and actually slept reasonably well last night. I got almost 6 hrs in between doses overnight, so that I actually got some rest.

I'm glad I make you smile, Nina. The meds are keeping the cough under control, but it's still enough that we aren't going to Mass today (DH is sick too, with the same thing, and while the dc are ok, welllllllllll they can't drive. LOL).

I dragged myself to confession yesterday afternoon, just because I REALLLLLY needed to go (needed to go last weekend, and didn't make it in time before Mass). But I didn't even stay to do my penance there at the church, but came on home, so I didn"t risk infecting anyone else with this nastiness. I know I resent it when people come to Mass sick, hacking, coughing, sneezing, blowing their noses, and there I am pregnant, with three little ones, just *knowing* we're all going to get sick in the coming week...and invariably, we are. I can understand people wanting to avail themselves of the sacraments, but for goodness sake's folks, STAY HOME!! The risks to others is just too great...

Sorry for the rant. I seriously debated going anyway, but just cannot see that the benefit to me outweighs the risks to all of the others at Mass. At least I am not dragging around all that sin with me, anymore.

Rachel,
First of all, I hope you are feeling better and don't need any advice at all.

but just in case, here is some more. You already got good advice from Nina and Jodie. The garlic idea is great. Also, take Vit C which will help your body fight it off. You have to be careful with the herbal teas, unfortunately, because there are many herbs that while healthy in general, can cause problems for the baby.

Robitussin always works great for me and is approved while pregnant. Sudafed as well for sinuses.

Other than that, a few palliative ideas. Sleep partially upright, either with pillows or in a recliner. It prevents all that build up of drainage in your throat and chest. Push fluids as much as you can. Lemon teas, water, whatever makes you feel better. With this weather, lots of hot tea would probably be great. A nice warm shower before bed will relieve some of the congestion and relax you. If it settles in your chest, or even before, you can use a little Vapor Rub to keep it from getting packed in.

Hope that helps! Lots of sympathy and a prayer for quick healing coming your way! I think we have all "been there, done that"!
